Madison Area YMCA members, program participants and families,

At the Madison Area YMCA we take your health and safety very seriously. We continue to monitor the respiratory illness novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in conjunction with federal and local health officials. Our team continues to reassess our strategies to keep our members, families, program participants and staff healthy and is prepared to protect all those we serve. We will continue to update you with new information as it becomes available.

We’ve educated our staff and are practicing additional hygiene and enhanced cleaning practices using our commercial cleaning products to disinfect and kill viruses on common surfaces. Further, YMCA staff that are ill will be sent home and asked not to return until they are symptom free. We are following the CDC guidelines of a 14 day self-quarantine from international and domestic hot spots, and also requiring a 7 day self-quarantine upon return from domestic air travel. Staff will not be permitted in the facility during these times. Members are asked to follow the same guidelines.

What you can see throughout our facilities:

  • Increased cleaning frequency of common surfaces throughout the day, including doorknobs, exercise equipment, light switches, tables, chairs and handrails.
  • Availability of antibacterial wipes.
  • We have implemented additional sanitation procedures with our F.M. Kirby Children’s Center bus transportation. All seats, buckles, and railings are cleaned and disinfected after each bus run.

These steps are in addition to our usual year-round processes that include:

  • A complete cleansing of our facility nightly by an outside company.
  • Daily cleaning by YMCA staff in high traffic areas of the facility.
  • Our pool filtration systems run 24/7 and utilizes chlorine to neutralize and kill bacteria and viruses, including COVID-19. In addition to automated monitoring systems, our aquatics staff manually tests the water every two hours to ensure we always meet state safety and operating guidelines.

Please note ADDITIONAL precautions we are taking at this time:

  • Nationwide Membership Suspended/Non-member Guests Not Permitted - For the safety of all members we are temporarily suspending access to Nationwide Memberships and guests. This policy will go into effect on Monday, March 16.
  • Suspension of Towel Service - For the safety of all members we are temporarily suspending towel service, beginning on Monday, March 16, in order to mitigate potential risks to staff and fellow members.
  • Fitness staff will monitor and evaluate Group Exercise class size to avoid crowding. Changes to the Group Exercise schedule will be communicated through MemberHub.
  • With recent distance learning in effect in our communities, if you are visiting the Family Center with your children, please keep in mind that we serve all populations, including active older adults that may be especially vulnerable or at risk. Please consider visiting us after 3 p.m. on weekdays in an effort to avoid the 12-3 p.m. window when many of our older members utilize our facility.
  • We will temporarily limit hosting of outside organization meetings and larger community gatherings at our facilities.

We have also been carefully monitoring facility usage and are making changes to our hours of operation at this time. Please note our updated hours of operation for the Family Center as of Monday, March 16, 2020:

  • Monday – Friday: 5:00am – 9:00pm
  • Saturday: 5:45am – 8:00pm
  • Sunday: 7:00am – 7:00pm

Paths to Wellness Programs

As of this Monday, March 16, we will to move to remote/distance training options for participants in the following Paths to Wellness group programs: LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, Delay the Disease, Peddling for Parkinson’s, Pilates for Parkinson’s, Group Lifestyle Balance – Diabetes Prevention Program, and MS One Step. We will temporarily postpone all in-person support sessions for the health safety of participants. If you are interested in remote/distance exercise support options, please reach out to Health and Wellness Director Christian Esola at 973-822-9622 x2281 or email [email protected] .

Kids Central

In addition, we will not offer babysitting hours in Kids Central from 12:30-4:00pm, Monday-Thursday, due to low utilization. All other Babysitting hours remain the same, including weekend hours. (Babysitting is available M-Th 8:30am-12:30pm and 4-8pm; F: 8:30am-12:30pm; Sa: 8am-12:30pm; Su: 8am-noon.)

Teen Programming

For the remainder of March, Teen Scene is postponed. In place, we will hold Kick Back Friday from 6pm to 8:30pm, limiting participants to the first 20 teens. Regular after-school Teen center hours are limited to 12 teens that are members or hold a current teen center pass.

F.M. Kirby Children’s Center

In an effort to maintain essential child care services for families in our community that are much needed at this time, we plan to continue operations at the F.M. Kirby Children’s Center as regularly scheduled. We will also offer full day programming for our Kindergarten-5th grade students, effective March 16. If you are interested in Kirby full day programming, please contact Karen Fusco, [email protected] , 973-377-4945 ext. 3226.

We continue to receive guidance from the Madison Department of Health and NJ Department of Children and Families. Our priority is to provide a safe environment for children and students, staff and families.

What you can do:

The CDC recommends these everyday preventative actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick and only return to the Y when you are feeling better.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • Remember the three Cs: Cover, Clean and Contain!
  • With recent school closures, if you are visiting the Family Center with your children, please keep in mind that we serve all populations, including active older adults that may be especially vulnerable or at risk. Please consider visiting us after 3 p.m. in an effort to avoid the 12-3 p.m. window when many of our older members utilize our facility.

When visiting our Y:

  • We are asking all members to clean equipment BEFORE AND AFTER workouts with the antibacterial wipes provided by the Y.
  • Children in our F.M Kirby Children’s Center and Kids Central babysitting at the Family Center are not permitted to participate when ill and cannot return until a minimum of 48 hours after being deemed symptom free.

The Madison Area YMCA currently remains open in an effort to serve our community. Any facility closures will be made in accordance with guidelines from public health officials. Should we determine that closure of our facilities is required, we will immediately broadcast this decision through all of our normal communications channels. If you have additional questions regarding our YMCA’s planning and efforts, please feel free to contact our Director of Human Resources and Risk Management, Kathy Martini: [email protected] .
