COVID-19 AND CWA
N95 mask donation
With our post season banding winding down, our banding crew did a little inventory last weekend. Lo and behold, they literally hit the present-day mother lode: a decent supply of N95 masks that is no longer being used by staff and volunteers when they prepare bait for waterfowl netting and banding. Calls were made, and they were quickly donated to two local hospitals!

FARMERS FLOCK TO NEW PROGRAM THAT SAVES WILD DUCKLINGS
California Waterfowl's new Delayed Wheat Harvest Incentive Program is off to a fantastic start. We hoped to enroll 1,000 acres in this pilot initiative that will save wild ducklings. Instead, we will be able to enroll 1,500!
Farmers stepped up even more, applying to enroll 6,500 acres!

There's still time to donate! We will enroll as many acres as funding allows. Click here to donate today.

LEGISLATURE STILL SCHEDULED TO HEAR ANTI-HUNTING BILLS
While the state Legislature has  temporarily suspended its 2020 session due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is – at least for now – scheduled to reconvene April 13 and resume committee hearings. The hearings could have limitations on public testimony, and it remains unclear what format the hearings would follow.

Here is just a sample of the bills we are fighting:

  • Ban use of dogs when deer hunting (SB 1041)
  • Ban possession of certain African game parts (SB 1175)
  • Put new restrictions on dog training facilities (AB 2691)

NEW KLAMATH WATER SETTLEMENT: BAD NEWS FOR DUCKS
A settlement reached late last week in Yurok Tribe v. Bureau of Reclamation will reduce the amount of water available to the Klamath Reclamation Project until at least Sept. 30, 2022.

This means the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge will be less likely to receive surplus irrigation water in late summer and fall, as it did last fall, helping provide much-needed habitat to waterfowl migrating south for the winter.

16- AND 17-YEAR-OLDS MUST PURCHASE ADULT LICENSES FOR 2020-21 SEASON
When 2020-21 California hunting licenses go on sale in mid-April, the state’s 16- and 17-year-olds will once again have to purchase adult hunting licenses and validations. For the past five years, anyone under age 18 has been eligible for the more affordable junior hunting license, and many of the youth hunting opportunities that come with it.
