California will become the second highest infected state in the Union this Saturday.
|
California's coronavirus spread is accelerating and COVID-19 daily infections have reached a new peak, passing the 4,000 mark for the first time, ending the day at 4,233, today's worst results of all 50 states. Los Angeles alone had almost half of the state's new cases (2,105), but it took hikes and new daily records across the 58 counties of California to add up to the undesired daily record, further demonstrating that the initial shelter in place order was a successful strategy that allowed the state to prepare for the statewide onslaught we are now experiencing. Today, COVID-19 killed 82 of our California friends, relatives, and neighbors. As its own country, California would rank 13th with more confirmed cases than Mexico (159,793 cases) -- which just overtook the spot from France with its latest report published in the last hour -- below Turkey (182,727 cases).
- COVID-19 California cases: 163,213 (+4,233) PEAK
- COVID-19 California deaths: 5,286 (+82)
- COVID-19 California death rate: 3.24%
- COVID-19 California testing: 2,997,988 individual tests
- COVID-19 California positivity rate: 5.44%

The Madera County Department of Public Health announced that 25 more of our county's residents are infected with COVID-19 -- two of whom were hospitalized: a man in his 80s and a woman in her 60s -- bringing our cumulative cases to 275. 9 coronavirus patients are now hospitalized in Madera. A sharp rise of 112 new cases (41% of total) in the last 10 days. All 7 local counties have reported new cases today, and a very heavy report of 17 new deaths in the last 24 hours. Today's combined coronavirus cases from the 7 local counties added 378 new infections. The 7 counties together have reported 11,974 infections and 246 COVID-19 deaths since our first cases appeared in the California central valley during the first week of March 2020. A different perspective: if the seven local counties were combined into one small country (population: 3,065,609), we would overtake South Korea's 58th national COVID-19 rank in the next few hours (population: 51,709,098). I cannot compare testing data because Tulare does not publish that information and Merced only sends it out sporadically. I have unsuccessfully requested the information from both counties.
