Our Response to COVID-19: Information

Good evening,
June 22, 2020 -- The world woke up after a brutal weekend, with over 9 million infected people on the planet. The daily reports have been numbered above 130,000 for the last week and ended today with 140,685 newly confirmed cases. Because there are so many large viral spreads all over the globe, we are now entering a rise of over 1 million new cases confirmed every week, meaning that we will probably reach 10 million confirmed global infections on Sunday. In North America, the US and Mexico are both still very much unable to bend their curve, with large uncontrolled flares, while our neighbor to the north, appears to be setting into a well-contained position, similar to many European countries, whose worst days are behind them, but who still practice social distancing, mask wearing, and many other strategies implemented to combat the arrival of the dreaded second wave.

The United States is aggressively trending towards a new peak.
Both California and Texas reported new single-day records today, both set above 5,000 for the first time in the two big states. Together, the two new epicenters contributed 34% of our country's confirmed coronavirus cases on this first Monday of Summer 2020, anchoring the national viral spread above the 30,000 daily mark, a position we had successfully avoided for about 7 weeks, until last week, when the viral spread exploded again nationwide to peak pandemic levels we had not seen since April. Also today, Florida became the 7th state having reported over 100,000 cumulative infections; the peninsula state will overtake Massachusetts' 6th national rank, most likely this coming Thursday.

California urges people to wear masks amid record Covid-19 hospitalizations
|
California officials implored residents to wear face masks and keep their distance from each other, after a record number of people were hospitalized with coronavirus over the weekend.
The state has reported more than 5,500 deaths and more than 178,000 cases, with more than 3,700 hospitalized on Sunday, surpassing the previous record of 3,547 hospitalizations set at the end of April. Health officials warned that while the spread of disease seems to have stabilized in many parts of the state, metrics in some rural regions of southern and central California are cause for concern...

The Madera County Department of Public Health announced this evening that 20 more of our county's residents were confirmed infected with COVID-19 over the last three days, bringing our cumulative cases to 334 in Madera/ One more Madera county patient left us over the weekend. COVID-19 has killed 271 residents from our area of the central valley, of which the cumulative documented infections now total 13,744. The numbers are sharply up today, partly because they are adding to last Friday's evening report, and also because Fresno county saw a particularly significant jump of new cases over the last three days (+298).
Note: The tests information was estimated because Tulare and Merced counties do not explicitly share the data (only occasionally in Merced press releases), however, the positivity rate is available in the Merced County dashboard and the state of California also publishes the Tulare positivity rate, which enabled me to estimate the tests quantities.
