Our Response to COVID-19: Information
|

Good evening,
June 25, 2020 -- Today the Chinese government released information that fills in a data gap and substantially affects global COVID-19 positivity, death, and infection rates because of the size of the country and the data that was published: China announced it had completed 90.41 million COVID-19 tests (
sourced here). This halves the world's COVID-19 positivity rate and reduces China's own rate down to 0.092%, based on the infections data released by the Chinese government. I am considering keeping "two sets of books", one with and another without the new data. Over the weekend, I will research this further to determine the best approach. Assuming the data is reliable, I will use it in tonight's report. Unfortunately, that arguably positive data dump coincides with the worst COVID-19 day on earth: in the last 24 hours, 182,052 infections were confirmed worldwide while the virus was busy killing 6,790 more people, now totaling 491,746 global victims. The world will pass the half million fatalities mark this coming Saturday. Once again, India, South Africa, Argentina, and Iraq broke their daily records, while Brazil's numbers have topped 40,000 infections three days in a row. The US had its second highest daily report (after yesterday's peak) and many other countries were at near peak data: Mexico, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Egypt, Oman, Iran, Kuwait, Bolivia.

The United States almost broke its own daily record established just yesterday
The states that have recently reached the peak of their respective infections curves, all released very high numbers today: Florida, Texas, Arizona, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Utah, Arkansas, and Mississippi together reported the second worst coronavirus day in the nation. California reported about 1,500 less infections than it did yesterday, which helped keep the US daily total 629 confirmed COVID-19 cases below yesterday's national peak.
Also today, CDC Director Robert Redfield reported that, based on antibody testing data, there are 10 times more infected Americans than has been reported, raising the number to about 24 million COVID-19 infections (see article below) .

CDC chief says coronavirus cases may be 10 times higher than reported
|
The number of people in the United States who have been infected with the coronavirus is likely to be 10 times as high as the 2.4 million confirmed cases, based on antibody tests, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.
CDC Director Robert Redfield’s estimate, shared with reporters in a conference call, indicates that at least 24 million Americans have been infected so far...

California’s COVID-19 positive test rate is jumping. Gavin Newsom blames private gatherings
|
The percentage of Californians testing positive for the coronavirus is increasing as the state has reopened its economy, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday, calling it a sign that people are letting their guard down and not doing enough to prevent the virus’ spread.
The percentage of people who have tested positive over the past two weeks is about 5.1 percent. The same number over the last 7 days is up to 5.6 percent, he said. On Monday, Newsom had said the two-week positive rate was 4.8 percent...

The Madera County Department of Public Health announced this evening that 13 more of our county's residents were confirmed infected with COVID-19 since yesterday, bringing our cumulative cases to 383 in Madera. All seven counties reported new cases today, adding up to 460 new infections. COVID-19 has killed 291 residents (+3) from our area of the central valley, of which the cumulative documented infections now total 15,311. Fresno county is accelerating its spread so aggressively that it may overtake Kern county's leading infections count among the 7 local counties monitored in this section of the daily updates. Tomorrow, this report will feature a weekly report and supporting graphs.
Note: The tests information was estimated because Tulare and Merced counties do not explicitly share the data (only occasionally in Merced press releases), however, the positivity rate is available in the Merced County dashboard and the state of California also publishes the Tulare positivity rate, which enabled me to estimate the tests quantities.
