Our Response to COVID-19: Information
Globally
Good evening,

Yesterday, I indicated we were within a week of confirming 7 million global cases of COVID-19. The sudden acceleration in Brazil, India, Chile, Mexico and countries in the Middle East and Africa will bring the world's amount to 7 million cases this coming Sunday and we will pass 400,000 deaths on Saturday. Earlier today, Brazil's worst day has reached the apex of the US daily report set in late March. I believe that number will be eclipsed within a few hours.
  • COVID-19 Global cases: 6,692,386 (+126,210)
  • COVID-19 Global deaths: 392,297 (+4,408)
  • COVID-19 Global death rate: 5.86%
COVID-19 attacks South Africa
South Africa's coronavirus spread just exploded overnight, nearly doubling the previous day's 1,713 new cases.

  • 40,792 cases (+3,267)
  • 848 deaths (+56)
  • 2.08% death rate
  • 4.97% positivity rate

The country had implemented a highly restrictive shelter in place policy that is being being challenged as invalid.
Brazil's COVID-19 Pandemic will be worse than in the US.
Brazil has become the pandemic's global epicenter: the virus spread is exploding while the country's leader aims to reopen the country. Miguel Lago, the director of Brazil’s Institute for Health Policy Studies, said reopening was a mistake likely to cause an explosion of infections: “ We are going to witness hospitals collapsing in almost every state, I think the worst is still to come."
  • 612,862 cases (+35,446)
  • 33.884 deaths (+1,767)
  • death rate: 5.53%
India's urban COVID-19 outbreak is morphing into a rural health crisis
NEW DELHI/MUMBAI (Reuters) - Rural parts of India have begun to see a surge in novel coronavirus infections, as millions of migrant workers returning from big cities and industrial hubs bring the virus home with them, according to data collected from seven Indian states.
'In the eastern state of Bihar, official data showed that of the 3,872 coronavirus cases recorded until June 1, 2,743 were linked to migrants workers who returned after May 3, when the government began to run trains and buses to reduce the exodus on foot." Read more...

Chile's cases and deaths are climbing fast. " Chile registers its deadliest day of coronavirus pandemic " published two days ago. Graphs show new data.
In the US
The US numbers are still well above 20,000 new daily COVID-19 cases, driven by growing numbers from expanded testing throughout the land and a few aggressive flares in certain states, including Texas (+1,769), Florida (+1,419, Florida's new apex), Georgia (+953), North Carolina (+853), Iowa (+533), Wisconsin (+492), Arkansas (+358).

  • COVID-19 USA cases: 1,923,721 (+22,033)

  • COVID-19 USA death rate: 5.73%

Texas reached its COVID-19 infections peak of 2,229 single-day cases only two days ago, and today's count of 1,769 new cases confirms the persistence of the viral spread and the upward trend clearly visible in the graph on the left. The state's data;
  • 71,206 cases (+1,769)
  • 1,800 deaths (+32)
  • 2.53% death rate
In California
For a few days, the State of California has confirmed more new daily infections than anywhere else in the nation. Although still far behind New York (383,899 cases) and New Jersey (164,486) in total infections, California will likely pass Illinois (124,759) tomorrow or the next day and will rank third in confirmed COVID-19 cases this coming weekend. The Golden State ranks 7th in fatalities behind (in order) New York (30,281), New Jersey (12,006), Massachusetts (7,201), Pennsylvania (5,883), Illinois (5,736), and Michigan 5,595).
