Our Response to COVID-19: Information
Globally
Good evening,

July 14, 2020 -- Today's second highest daily report of new global infections was fueled by reports of large daily cases in the US, Brazil, India (peaking again today), and Mexico. The global coronavirus death tally also rose faster today, adding 5,593 new fatalities as the world is about to mourn its 600,000th victim this coming weekend. India's climb is as stunning as it has been consistent; the country's positivity rate is steadily rising even as the country has managed to almost double its daily testing efforts in the last month. Its curve shows the relentless spread of the virus is out of control and has never really even hinted at a slow down or potential plateau. Take a moment to look at the graphs below and be sure to let me know if you have any questions about the featured data.

COVID-19 killed 935 Americans today, as the US adds 65,594 new daily cases, slightly more than yesterday's second worst day, but with more than twice the deaths.

California, Florida, and Texas respectively reported 133, 132, and 131 deaths today, the highest death numbers reported in one day in both Florida and Texas. Florida and Texas still have very high single day positivity rates, indicating they are still very much on the ascent of their COVID-19 pandemic curves. Sadly, the sharp rises in case numbers are starting to translate into rising fatalities, which will keep mounting as long as the two southern states cannot control their spread. California's positivity rate seems to be better contained, still under the dreaded 10%. As many other states contributed large numbers to the national tally, keeping the United States on high pandemic alert, a few small states also signaled trouble: Oklahoma, Nevada, and Wisconsin peaked today, confirming the upward trends all three states started simultaneously in the middle of June, a short month ago.
Florida data:

  • 291,629 cases (+91,94)
  • 4,409 deaths (+132) PEAK
  • death rate: 3.26%
  • 2,688,366 tests
  • positivity rate: 10.85%
  • 1 day positivity rate: 20.09%
Texas data:

  • 285,772 cases (+11,060)
  • 3,471 deaths (+131) PEAK
  • death rate: 1.21%
  • 2,864,541 tests
  • positivity rate: 9.98%
  • 1 day positivity rate: 25.29%

Los Angeles Reports Highest-Ever Number Of New Coronavirus Cases And Hospitalizations
Source: deadline.com
The day after California Governor Gavin Newsom shut down a number of business sectors in the state, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed record new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in a day with 4,244 new cases and 2,103 people currently hospitalized.

That compares with 2,593 new COVID-19 cases on Monday.

Of the 2,103 people currently hospitalized, 27% of these people are confirmed cases in the ICU and 19% are confirmed cases on ventilators. According to L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, on Monday there were only 766 hospital beds left for the region’s 10 million residents.

That led Garcetti to say that the city’s COVID-19 threat meter is “on the border of going to red,” the highest level, which would mean a complete shutdown in L.A. owing to the pandemic.

The county confirmed 73 new deaths of Covid-19. This is one of the highest number of new deaths reported in a day and may reflect a lag in the reporting of deaths over the weekend.

Testing results are available for over 1,387,000 individuals with 9% of all people testing positive. READ MORE
