Our Response to COVID-19: Information

Good evening,
July 15, 2020 -- Today's global new daily cases were 744 shy of the record set five days ago. Further installing the pattern we have observed in the last weeks, with the most infected countries reporting much higher numbers (US, Brazil South Africa, Argentina, Colombia, Israel, Guatemala, Bolivia)... and then there is India, which obliterated the new cases record it had just established yesterday. Remarkably, India reported having tested 323,161 more people in the last 24 hours, almost 13% more than it had the previous day (its highest single day population testing report until today), and still raising the country's overall positivity rate to 7.81% while its single day rate was 10.11%. These are encouraging numbers only in that the country's testing infrastructure has greatly improved in the last month, but still lags as the vertiginous climb of infections appears more ferocious every day, with India establishing new national records 7 out of the last 8 days.
The bottom two graphs, featured in the global section of the update, have been revised to illustrate the data from the highest 10 reporting countries along with a few of the previous European hot spots, and China, to show the successful and less successful controls of the spread around the world. Although this is a very fluid situation, the current top four nations in deep trouble today are the United States, Brazil, India, and Mexico.

California restricts COVID-19 testing as cases surge
Source: nbcnews.com

“We are in an alarming and dangerous phase,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the L.A. County Department of Public Health.
California is changing its coronavirus testing strategy after it shattered its own record Wednesday for new COVID-19 infections, reporting a staggering 11,126 confirmed cases.
The testing strategy will return to focusing on vulnerable patients and those at the highest risk of contracting the virus, which has infected more than 3 million Americans, according NBC News counts.
The updated strategy is similar to what was in place before April when public health officials opened testing to everyone, including people without symptoms.
But as California sinks deeper and deeper into the pandemic, public health officials are trying to free up space in the health system for patients who will require the most care. Targeted testing could alleviate some of the supply chain shortages...
