Our Response to COVID-19: Information
Globally
Good evening,

July 2, 2020 -- The United States set the highest global single day record of new infections and many other countries also peaked today, bringing the world even closer to the 11 millionth COVID-19 patient. In fact, had the UK not revised its numbers down by over 30,000 cases today* -- see note below --, the world would have already passed the 11 million mark, which, it will do sometime tonight or early morning tomorrow. The spread is accelerating in the US, Brazil, India, Bangladesh, Mexico, Indonesia, South Africa, all setting new peaks today. Other countries such as Colombia, Iraq, and Argentina reported near peak single-day infections, confirming the spread is accelerating world wide.

Note: I do not expect reliable data tomorrow as the US will observe its national holiday and most offices will be closed. Depending on data availability, I may postpone the next report until Monday evening (PDT).

*:" Methodologies between nations differ and we will be making future revisions to align approaches as much as possible across the 4 nations. Due to this change, and a revision of historical data in pillar 1, the cumulative total for positive cases is 30,302 lower than if you added the daily figure to yesterday’s total. We will revise the methodology note explaining this in more detail in due course" UK Government note (read here) .

The United States breaks the global single-day infections record with 57,236 new confirmed cases

Eleven states, including New York, reported over 1,000 new cases today, and two states, California and Florida, broke the 10,000 mark. The new national peak is slightly more than 60% higher than the peak established while the country was sheltering in place, on April 25, 2020, a little over two months ago. At the end of that day, the nation had already accumulated 958,985 COVID-19 cases and the virus had killed 55,271 Americans. Since that day, our nation has added 1,878,204 new COVID-19 infections and we have lost 75,764 more of our family, friends, and neighbors in only 9 and a half weeks. Today, after many months of struggle, the US is still the country with the worst COVID-19 devastation on earth.

In California
California explodes with 10,463 new single day cases and more California families mourn 119 new deaths, the highest one-day death toll since April 22, 2020, when we lost 132 Californians.
Once again, California led the nation with 10,463 new coronavirus cases, the second state today, after Florida, reporting over 10,000 cases. The golden state's one-day positivity rate surged up to 12.32%, which is more than twice the overall pandemic's positivity rate in the state, indicating a much wider and significant acceleration of the spread statewide.

California's school districts are struggling to come up with working strategies towards reopening their classrooms in the COVID-19 era, considering the spread of the emerging disease is crippling families economically, socially, educationally, and possibly in many other ways. The only path for us to bring down the curve, and provide a safe environment for our communities to be able to go back to school, go back to work, and start being productive again can only be achieved in one of two ways:

  1. everyone gets vaccinated to provide herd immunity - but that is probably a year away, at best - or
  2. everyone implements and observes all the mitigation practices we know we need to support our families, friends, and communities: wear a cloth mask, practice physical distancing, respect one another and actively refuse to help the spread of the virus.

A simple yet powerful set of tools we can all use to help our community and ourselves.
California's daily spread of the virus has peaked four out of the last seven days!
  • COVID-19 California cases: 247,743 (+10,463) PEAK
  • COVID-19 California deaths: 6,282 (+119)
  • COVID-19 California death rate: 2.54%
  • COVID-19 California testing: 4,339,093 individual tests
  • COVID-19 California positivity rate: 5.71%
  • COVID-19 California single-day positivity rate: 12,32%

In the Central Valley
The Madera County Department of Public Health announced this evening that 25 more of our county's residents have been confirmed infected with COVID-19 today, bringing our cumulative cases to 566 in Madera and total deaths to 5. Six out of the seven counties did report new cases today, adding up to a new valley peak of 895 new infections and 10 new COVID-19 deaths. COVID-19 has killed 336 residents from our area of the central valley, of which the cumulative documented infections now total 19,391. Fresno county leads the 7 counties with 5,626 cases, reaching a new one-day peak of 337 cases. The spread is accelerating in the central valley, as the following numbers attest: 67% of the new COVID-19 cases (+12,401) have been confirmed since June 1 while 51% of the deaths (+165) have occurred in the last 32 days.

Note: The tests information was estimated because Tulare and Merced counties do not explicitly share the data (only occasionally in Merced press releases), however, the positivity rate is available in the Merced County dashboard and the state of California also publishes the Tulare positivity rate, which enabled me to estimate the tests quantities.
