Good evening,
July 27, 2020 -- Over the weekend, India became the third country, after the United States and Brazil, to report over 50,000 new infections over a 24 hour period, ending Sunday with 50,525 new cases. Although today's report from India (+46,484) was lower, it is still Monday's second highest report behind the United States'. India has lost 33,448 of its residents to the disease since its first victim died on March 12, months ago. In other news, after almost two weeks with no testing data updates, Brazil just released testing numbers, adding 7,690,033 to its tally (with no further details). The global daily infections were still above 200,000 today but well below the 288,734 cases reported last Friday. It is obviously too early to consider it a trend, but the day's lower number is welcome news in the middle of these extraordinarily stressful days.

Republicans unveil coronavirus plan, slash emergency unemployment benefit
Source: Reuters
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Republicans on Monday proposed a $1 trillion coronavirus aid package hammered out with the White House, paving the way for talks with Democrats on how to help Americans as expanded unemployment benefits for millions of workers expire this week.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called the proposal a “tailored and targeted” plan focused on getting children back to school and employees back to work and protecting corporations from lawsuits, while slashing the expiring supplemental unemployment benefits of $600 a week by two-thirds...

Newsom said 45 hospitals within Central California have continued to see surges in hospitalizations and ICU rates.
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Central California has become a hotspot for coronavirus outbreaks, and Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a new task force aimed at gaining control over the transmission levels and aiding healthcare workers in Central Valley counties.
Dr. Mark Ghaly said eight counties have an "R-effective" higher than 1. The effective reproduction number (called R-effective) is the measure of the average number of new infections caused by a single infected individual.
Those eight counties include Fresno, Tulare and Stanislaus counties, where positivity rates have risen to 17.7%, more than double the statewide positivity rate of 7.5%.
Newsom said many of the outbreaks in Central California are coming from essential workplaces, including packing plants, corrections facilities and nursing homes. He added the virus had disproportionately impacted the Latino community because they make up a higher percentage of the workforce in these businesses.
The governor said $52 million from a federal...
