Our Response to COVID-19: Information
Globally
Good evening,

July 29, 2020 -- The most infected three countries: the US, Brazil and India together added 190,688 (66.23%) of today's global tally of newly confirmed coronavirus infections. Brazil reported an explosion of new cases, topping the world with a sobering 70,869 new infections and 1,554 new COVID-19 deaths. India has passed the 50,000 bar twice in the last four days, setting a new high watermark, earlier today, at 52,249 and reporting 35,003 deaths from COVID-19. The country's overall positivity rate, from 17,743,740 administered tests to date is 8.93%, slowly rising every day because India's positivity rate over the last 14 days is 11.62%. To the North, China reported 101 new cases, its first triple digit one-day case count since the end of March. Although it is a relatively small number compared to the many global raging hot spots, the trend is not welcome and I suspect a lock down is imminent in the north eastern city of Dalian, situated at the end of a peninsula, half way between Beijing and Pyongyang. According to the South China Morning Post, as of yesterday, half of the 6 million residents of the city of Dalian have already been tested (although the newspaper claims that was all done in three days, which is hard to conceive, let alone believe IMHO).

California and Florida hit new daily record high coronavirus deaths | cbsnews.com
Both California and Florida — the two states with the highest number of coronavirus cases in the country — set new records for single-day coronavirus deaths on Wednesday. The heartbreaking milestones come as the U.S. surpasses 150,000 deaths from the virus.

California Governor Gavin Newsom on Wednesday said 197 people in the state died from COVID-19 on Tuesday, the state's highest in a single day. The state also reported 8,755 new positive cases.

According to Johns Hopkins University, California has the highest number of confirmed cases in the U.S., with at least 473,785. If California were its own country, it would have the fifth-highest number of cases behind only the U.S., Brazil, India and Russia.

"Please — WEAR A MASK," Newsom tweeted.

Florida's Department of Health confirmed Wednesday that 216 people died from the virus on Tuesday, a new single-day record for the state just one day after setting its previous record of 186 new deaths. An additional 9,448 people tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the state's total to at least 451,423 confirmed cases.

The Sunshine State surpassed New York — a former hot spot that reported six new COVID-19 fatalities Wednesday — in total confirmed cases Saturday. Many ICUs across the state are at or nearing capacity.
