Good evening,
August 19, 2020 -- India ended the day reporting 804 cases shy of 70,000 new daily infections, leading the world with new cases and also with new tests, reaching a new high mark (see detailed data below). Colombia also established a new record with over 13,000 reported infections for the day. In Europe, three of the Union's largest countries are showing sustained flare ups: France (+3,776), Spain (+3,715), and Germany (+1,583). Over the last two weeks the world's daily new cases has been averaging at 256,724 infections. Today's update was above the average, yesterday's was below. One thing is clear, we are still very much in the middle of the global spread's first wave, stuck on a high plateau, with rising deaths. Today's +7,287 was the highest global death report in almost a month. This Friday, the world will have mourned its 800,000th COVID-19 victim, as the coronavirus toll is accelerating toward 1 million deaths, to be likely reached a month from today.

Birx says she wishes US lockdown had resembled the one in Italy | cnn.com
(CNN) Looking back to the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, the White House coronavirus task force coordinator said Monday she wished the United States had gone into a stricter lockdown.
"I wish that when we went into lockdown (in March), we looked like Italy," Dr. Deborah Birx said Monday. "When Italy locked down, I mean, people weren't allowed out of their houses (without a pass). Americans don't react well to that kind of prohibition."
In Italy as the virus spread, residents were told to stay home and only leave for essential activities. Authorities would stop people and check to make sure they had documents that said where and why they were traveling.
In a roundtable discussion hosted by Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, Birx said she has learned what Americans are willing to do to combat the virus, and that... READ MORE

How many people really wear masks? We counted. It wasn’t pretty | latimes.com
|
To reduce the spread of the coronavirus, all Californians are required to wear a mask person wearing a mask in crowded outdoor spaces. Failure to do so is a misdemeanor under an order issued in June by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Enforcement has been lax, and many people have resisted. It’s unknown how widely the public adheres to the rule, so The Times decided to find out.
What we did - Last month, over the course of a week, our reporters observed passersby in three locations in Los Angeles and Orange counties. Each person’s compliance with the mask order was classified into one of these three categories:
- Correct - Wearing a mask that covers both the nose and mouth.
- Incorrect - Wearing a mask that fails to cover both the nose and mouth.
- No mask - Not wearing a mask at all.
We visited a trendy Venice shopping district, Main Street in Huntington Beach, and a leafy public park in north Long Beach. We monitored each location six times between July 23 and July 28, tracking a total of 3,026 passersby in two-hour shifts... READ MORE

The Madera County Department of Public Health COVID-19 Update:
8/19/2020 COVID-19 UPDATE: Reporting 40 new cases bringing the total number of reported cases to 3,236.
Of the 3,236:
- 766 active case (including 22 Madera County residents hospitalized in Madera County)
- 2,422 recovered (52 released from isolation)
- 47 deceased
Today, the local counties confirmed 944 new infections and 17 new coronavirus deaths. Kern County reported 12 of the day's deaths, two days in a row.
We are still on the ascent of the spread's epidemiological graph and have yet to flatten our local curve. Our friends and neighbors are needlessly dying, many families are suffering. Science and the courage to follow its logic will solve this pandemic, any other discourse is useless.
