March 5, 2020 -- This is the second week with flat global numbers As the Us saw a steady decline in new cases, other countries confirmed their persistent ascent, while Brazil reported 31% more cases than it did two weeks ago. In fact, Brazil reported almost as many cases (414,049) this week as were reported in the United States (435,106). 7-day averages are now rivaling or exceeding the peaks from their previous waves in Bahrain, Brazil, Czechia, Cambodia, Cuba, Ecuador, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iraq, Jamaica, Jordan, Kosovo, Kuwait, Malta, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Palestine, Paraguay, Somalia, Sweden, and Uruguay. Although India’s daily numbers are inching up, if the trends continue, Brazil will overtake India’s cumulative covid-19 positive cases next week, ranking as the second most infected country after the United States. The world counted 2,754,066 new covid-19 cases in the last week, a 2% uptick, and 62,932 new global covid-19 fatalities, 2% fewer deaths than were recorded in last week’s report.

This week, California's 31,049 new coronavirus infections total is 23% lower than it was last week and 2,043 more Californians have died from covid-19 (7% fewer than last week). The welcome declines in both categories are similar to what they were a week ago, however, the fatalities are still much higher, when compared to similar case numbers before the last wave. More patience, diligence, vaccinations, and compassion are needed to beat the virus.

The Madera County Department of Public Health COVID-19 Update:
3/5/2021: Reporting 27 cases from the public and 5 from Central California Women’s Facility (32 total new cases) bringing the total number of reported cases to 15,540.
Of the 15,540:
- 584 active case (including 4 Madera County residents hospitalized in Madera County)
- 14,742 recovered (26 released from isolation)
- 214 deceased

Including its prison population, Madera County is averaging 26 new cases per day (16 per 100K), with 184 new cases revealed over the last 7 days, 19 fewer cases than were totaled last week (203), as we aim to reduce the average down to 11 cases per day (7 cases per 100K) over 7 days, as required to switch our county from purple to red -- "widespread" to "substantial" -- contagion risk.
Today, the seven local counties together reported 416 new infections and 38 new coronavirus deaths. In the combined 7 counties, COVID-19 has infected 315,713 people and has killed 4,056 residents of our region since it claimed its first central valley victim, in Madera, on March 26, 2020.
Our friends and neighbors are needlessly dying; many families are suffering. Science and the courage to follow its logic will solve this pandemic, any other discourse is inadequate.

The new infections have significantly decreased to the lowest weekly reported numbers since the last week of October. However, the total of 198 new deaths for the week is stubbornly high, especially when compared to previous similar weekly case totals. The region's decreasing new cases numbers are now well below last summer's peaks. Notably, 1,936 (48%) of the total 4,056 covid-19 deaths and 97,726 (31%) of the total 315,713 infections recorded in the local counties have occurred since January 1, 2021.
Data indicates the second covid-19 wave in the central valley area defined by the 7 local counties (Mariposa, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Tulare, Kings, and Kern counties) is deadlier than the first wave when comparing the two curves. As new cases numbers were improving in September, after the second wave, new deaths followed the same downward pattern. However, as spring approaches, it appears the cases are dropping significantly but the deaths are not. As clearly visible in the graphs below, the stark reality of the deadlier winter is underscored in Kern County with persistently high daily covid-19 fatalities. This week, Kern County confirmed 37% of the 7 counties' new covid-19 cases while reporting 56% of the 7 counties' fatalities.

Keep observing the simple yet proven safety habits of physical-distancing, mask-wearing, and frequent hand-washing, that will help drive down new infections and new deaths, to a level low enough so as to give us a chance to reopen our schools for onsite education and thus, reopen our economy. Nothing else will work until we have massively administered a safe and effective covid-19 vaccine -- currently estimated by vaccinating up to 85% of the population -- to finally reach herd immunity.
