Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. — Matthew 6:34
What will this day bring? That’s often the way I start my day. Yes, there are things on my calendar and my to-do list, but remaining open to the unscheduled people and the conversations they bring is such an important part of being in ministry.
How many times I have had the most meaningful conversations on the fly, when such a thing was not scheduled into my day! How many times I have had people apologize to me for “taking up my time,” not realizing the primary business I am called to be engaged in is the business of God’s people, simply because that’s who Jesus is.
Jesus always made time for people. He had conversations in unexpected places at unplanned times. He stayed longer than he expected to, and delayed his plans to travel through towns when there were people in need of healing and hope.
While leading a church is filled with all sorts of activities—from leading worship, planning meetings and agendas, to overseeing our building, committee work, and church finances—truly my role at CPC is filled with many tasks. But my primary role at CPC is to feed God’s sheep, who have been entrusted to my care, and I love the work I do (even when it keeps me from my to-do list!)
So, let’s not worry about tomorrow, for it will take care of itself. Rather, focus on being open to the people, places, and things of today that may not be on your to-do list. Stop to smell the roses and have the conversations. Make the time to truly “see” the people in your midst, because that is where “real” life happens and God is found.
