As the vibrant colors of fall begin to blanket our surroundings, it's a natural time for reflection and transition. At the Center, we continue to embrace this spirit of growth and change by actively engaging in Total Worker Health® initiatives.
Project Updates:

The Total Teacher Health project recently empowered educators through facilitator training, equipping them to better manage workplace stress.

SHIFT our healthcare project collaborated with union staff to co-create solutions for alleviating excessive workload pressures

Outreach launched a TWH for Students course to introduce TWH practice concepts to future members of the OSH profession.

Presenters Erika Sabbath, ScD, and Sundus Siddique, ScD, MPH, will share key findings from recent studies and discuss how laws, regulations, and organizational policies can be improved to enhance the well-being of these vital professionals.

What's DEI Got To Do With Total Worker Health®? |

Diversity, equity and inclusion, often referred to as "DEI," has become a mainstream topic in recent years, due to recent social justice movements and current political agendas. At its core, DEI focuses on creating an environment that acknowledges and embraces the distinctive qualities and viewpoints that individuals bring. DEI is about ensuring fairness, providing equal access to opportunities, and fostering a sense of belonging for all within an organization or community. In 2021, the CDC declared racism to be a public health crisis, spurring organizations to initiate or renew efforts in DEI in an effort to support employee health and well-being. Stereotypes associated with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives can lead to bias, which can result in discrimination. Continue reading here.

CPH-NEW Continuing Education and Training
NEW! The Center for the Promotion of Health in the New England Workplace released a new Total Worker Health for Students 2-hour e-learning course. The free, self-paced learning materials help college and university students develop an understanding of the Total Worker Health concept and how it relates to their field of study. An instructor guide with suggested readings and class activities is available on request by emailing cphnew@uml.edu.

Our current offerings include specialized courses such as "Total Worker Health® (TWH) for Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Professionals," "TWH Employer Crisis Preparedness," "Job Stress for Today’s Nurse," "Ergonomics in Healthcare," and "Opioid Hazard Awareness Training." These courses are designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to address critical issues in workplace health and safety, empowering them to create safer, healthier environments for all workers. Whether you're an OSH professional, nurse, or employer, our courses provide valuable insights to help you meet the challenges of today's workplace.
Virtual Instructor led training
CPH-NEW is dedicated to building capacity for implementing the Healthy Workplace Participatory Program (HWPP) through our engaging virtual instructor-led courses. These interactive sessions are designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to champion Total Worker Health® (TWH) initiatives in their organizations. Our offerings include "Total Worker Health Facilitator Training," "Building Total Worker Health Leaders in Labor," and "Total Worker Health Learning Labs." We are also excited to announce the upcoming "Healthy Workplace Participatory Program Introduction Course," which will provide foundational insights into creating healthier, safer workplaces. These courses are ideal for those looking to lead transformative workplace health initiatives and build a culture of well-being within their organizations.

September 19, 2024 1-2:30 PM EST: NIOSH presents: Long Work Hours and Cardiovascular Disease: State of the Science. This webinar will feature three subject-matter experts who will describe occupational exposure to long work hours, present findings from systematic reviews linking long work hours to cardiovascular outcomes, and present recent epidemiologic findings relevant to primary and secondary CVD prevention.

CPH-NEW Reseacher, Dr. Cora Roelofs, ScD, has published a new article, A method to assess bullying and harassment as an upstream determinant of construction worker mental health.
The newest edition of the Occupational Health Science journal features articles from CPH-NEW researchers. Work-Health Conflict among Breast Cancer Survivors: Associations with Cancer Self-Management, Quality of Life, and Anticipated Turnover and Organizational Support Factors Associated with Fatigue and Turnover Intention among Workers with Chronic Health Conditions
The Center for Health, Work and Environment at the University of Colorado, has developed a "Health Risk Calculator" to calculate your company's risk and see how you can create a safe and healthy environment for your employees.
The Center for Healthy Work at the University of Chicago has created an easy to read brief "Why Don’t Employees Participate in Well-being Programs? A Research-Informed Systems-Based Model". They have also created In a Year’s Work™ , an educational game that demonstrates how different workers within the same organization experience the social determinants of health.
The Healthier Workforce Center of the Midwest at the University of Iowa has created "Protecting Young Workers: A guide for Employers." This guide provides insight and tools employers can take to promote safety for younger workers.

Congratulations to Research Professor Cora Roelofs, ScD, who will start a new position as Director of Evaluation for the Center for the Protection of Workers Rights (CPWR). We thank Dr. Roelof’s for her leadership of the Employer Crisis Preparedness Project.
CPH-NEW researchers Jennifer Cavallari, ScD, Suzanne Nobrega, PhD, Serena Rice, MS, and Tess Parker, MS, and collaborator Liz Hill, MPH, CIH presented a symposium, Transformations of the Healthy Workplace Participatory Program to Address Job Stress in U.S. Workplaces, at the European Academy of Occupational Health Psychology June 5-8, in Granada Spain.
Congratulations to Post-doctoral Fellow Sierra Trudel, PhD, who has taken a position as Assistant Professor of School Psychology at Marist College. We thank Dr. Trudel for her valuable work on the Total Teacher Health project.
CPH-NEW TWH trainer, Serena Rice, MS, will be a TWH expert panelist at the 3rd Annual Central NY Healthy Workforce Business Conference Oct 8th.
