Community Scholars Symposium
|
|
The Intersection of Community, Academia, and Grantmaking
This symposium offers insights into developing, pitching, and funding innovative project ideas that utilize community-academic partnerships. Participants will receive an introduction from Giridhar Mallya of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation on "Partnering to Achieve Health Equity." Penn Community Scholars will then participate in a "shark-tank style" competition where they will pitch ideas to a panel of funders and academics that are aimed at improving social and health outcomes in local communities.
The Penn Community Scholars Program is primarily supported by the University of Pennsylvania's Office of the Provost, with additional support and partnership from the Penn Injury Science Center and the Center for Public
Health Initiatives.

Gary Wu, MD at March CPHI Seminar
|
We were thrilled to host Dr. Gary Wu, MD, Ferdinand G. Weisbrod Professor in Gastroenterology, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, at the March 28th CPHI seminar, "What's public health got to do with it? The impact of diet and the microbiome on health and disease." Dr. Wu articulated the need to bridge the gap between research and clinical medicine involving nutritional science. He discussed the impact of nutrition and environment on an individuals microbiome, and how this can change their susceptibility to disease. In Dr. Wu's discussion he highlighted programs such as PenNSAM, and how they are using nutrition as a way to improve human health and disease outbreaks. Dr. Wu engaged the audience in a
thoughtful discussion regarding the need to study
the role of diet and the microbiome in human health.
