A Guide to Community Planning Academies by our very own Donna J. Carney!

CPI Director Donna Carney wrote a a step-by-step guide for creating, managing, and growing a community planning academies like CPI.
Based on the Donna's 13 years of experience in creating and directing the Philadelphia Citizens Planning Institute, it offers practical, field-tested advice and lessons learned from a program that has graduated more than 700 "citizen planners". Program Manager Verónica Ayala is also a contributing author.

The City of Philadelphia released a beta version for an Equitable Engagement Toolkit. This toolkit, which was created by community members and City of Philadelphia engagement practitioners, offers comprehensive guidance to help the City work with communities in more equitable ways.

Drew Miller (Spring 2021) was working evenings at a restaurant when construction started next door to his home in Fishtown. He wasn’t given notice that a project was starting, or any timeline or expectations for how his home would be impacted by the work. When the construction became disruptive, Drew had to be his own advocate. Now, he advocates for homeowners and transparency from developers as part of his career.

Right of Way Roundtables
StreetBoxPHL and The Collaborative are launching “ROW Roundtables,” a forum for stewards of public spaces in the ROW to learn from each other and provide advice for those looking to transform their streets. The Roundtables will feature guest speakers from across the city and the country to learn more about how to create parklets, pedestrian plazas, and otherwise give concrete back to communities in monthly zoom meetings. Members of CBO’s, registered community organizations (RCOs), block captains, community development corporation staff, Business improvement Districts, and other organizations are encouraged to sign up for more information!

Help transform the corner of Broad and Erie!
Treasure Philly! is a first-of-its-kind effort to identify, record, and preserve cultural resources in Philadelphia from the Philadelphia Historic Commission. The Commission wants to bring to light the many histories of Philadelphia that were previously overlooked, and Treasure Philly! is an opportunity to find new ways to document, designate, and protect our city's history.
Broad, Germantown and Erie is one of the most dynamic parts of the city. The intersection is a public transportation hub and shopping district, with remarkable architecture, rich history, and a strong community. In the summer of 2023, Treasure Philly! will partner with community groups and residents to explore ways the City's Historical Commission can document and honor the neighborhood.

Apply for an Art Residency with Monument Lab
Monument Lab is hosting its first-ever artist residency program for Philadelphia public artists. Through the theme of “exchange,” the goal is to support emerging public artists to evolve their practice and prepare for future large-scale monument commission opportunities while building stronger relationships within and across the city’s neighborhoods.

Apply for the Public Space Enhancement Mini-Grant!
The grant provides $500 - $2,000 to communities that historically have had less investment (or active disinvestment) in the built environment and city services, based on the belief that residents are the best advocates to identify and carry out public space improvements. This program is run by Feet First Philly and is partially funded by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health.
