Not a Normal
Stack of Paper

Over the past month, we've been responding to the needs of Coast Guard members recovering from Hurricane Ida. This storm produced significant damage in Louisiana and this stack of paper graphically represents everything our Association could do to provide financial relief in the form of Grants to families in need. In our partnership with the Coast Guard Foundation, we've been able to send over $395,000 to 232 Coast Guard members.

We wish to thank our 5 Chapters, and their members, who stepped up to review and process all of these grant requests; Southernmost, Cape May, Mobile, NE Florida, and Long Beach.

We're hoping the rest of the Hurricane Season remains calm.

All eligible beneficiaries including active duty members and their families, retirees, civilian employees and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and Reserve can now shop CGX online at www.shopcgx.com.

Veterans/Gold Star Families: Free Entrance into National Parks/Public Lands

Entrance fees for the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and standard amenity recreation fees for the Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sites are waived for current Military Service-members and their dependents, Veterans and Gold Star Families.

They now have free access to approximately 2,000 public locations spread out across more than 400 million acres of public lands, which host activities to fit any lifestyle, from serene to high octane, including hiking, fishing, paddling, biking, hunting, stargazing, camping, and much more.

Coast Guard Launches Electronic Health Record System in Pacific Area

Late last month, the Coast Guard deployed the MHS GENESIS electronic health record (EHR) system to 32 Coast Guard Pacific Area medical facilities, kicking off the first major implementation of an EHR system for the service.

The electronic health records acquisition will modernize the Coast Guard's health care data management by acquiring an EHR solution in place of its primarily paper-based health record system. Having an EHR capability will make patient record retrieval easier and faster; reduce administrative errors; and allow electronic information exchange with the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs and commercial care providers.

The Coast Guard's EHR program, once fully implemented, will service all Coast Guard clinics and sick bays - ashore and afloat.

All GI Bill Users Soon Will Be Required to Contact the VA Each Month to Receive Payment

A new rule took effect in August requiring many Post-9/11 GI Bill users to verify their school attendance with the Department of Veterans Affairs each month before receiving any payments. Starting this December, that requirement will be expanded to all Post-9/11 GI Bill recipients.

Users of all other GI Bill programs, such as the Montgomery GI Bill, long have been required to verify their school attendance each month. And if you don't verify your attendance, you don't get any money.

Beginning immediately, GI Bill users who are attending a technical school, also known as a "non-college degree" or NCD school, must verify their school attendance with the VA each month in order to receive their Monthly Housing Allowance, according to a VA press release.

Book of the Month: Military Leadership
The sixth edition of this classic text continues its popular interdisciplinary approach to the topic of leadership by examining fundamental elements of military leadership: the 'process' of leadership, the dynamic personal interactions between leader and followers, and the individual and organizational values that foster effective military leadership.

When Isolated At Home, Reconnect With Old
Service Friends
These unprecedented times are contributing to a higher level of anxiety, particularly among our Veteran population. The constant flow of often discouraging news, along with a reduced ability to mingle with others to keep spirits up, makes it difficult for some to maintain their morale. TogetherWeServed, a military heritage community website and home to over 1.9 million U.S. Military Veterans, wants to help.

A secure virtual base for Veterans

During a Veteran’s military service, their base, ship or shore station is place to call home – a safe haven to share in the company of some of the finest men and women with a mission in common. Together We Served (TWS) aims to replicate that same spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood in its own “Virtual Base” website.

With its membership containing only active serving and Veterans, TWS provides a secure platform for all Veterans to engage with other Veterans on a level that is simply not possible in most social networking environments.
