Grant Opportunity

Potential Federal Grant Funding Collaboration for Transportation Safety-

UNC Highway Safety Research Center is reaching out regarding the possibility of a collaboration to apply for a Federal grant that could support your local community’s efforts around roadway safety. The Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program (SS4A) is a $5 billion Federal initiative that funds regional, local, and Tribal initiatives to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries. Many local entities lack the ability to directly apply and administer the funds, and that’s where the UNC Highway Safety Research Center can help.

As a public university, they can apply for an SS4A grant on behalf of local entities and serve as a grant administrator and technical assistance provider.

  • We are now seeking up to six partner agencies who wish to join in a UNC-HSRC-led application, focused on planning and demonstration activities that will address transportation safety in school zones and speed management approaches that protect all road users.
  • To be part of our SS4A application, we will need a letter of support from each community by May 22, 2026.

Here is their flyer on the SS4A program, participation requirements, and the ways in which UNC HSRC can provide support.

UNC - HSRC recognizes that the Central Pines Region is a fast-growing region and that there are a lot of plans already in place across the region to address transportation safety for children, pedestrians, and other road users. We welcome the chance to talk more with you about your community’s transportation safety needs, how a SS4A grant could help fill a gap, and how we can be a partner in helping you access Federal funds to support your plans and initiatives. If you are able to meet, we have availability for a call on the following dates:

  • Monday, May 4, between 11 am and 4 pm
  • Other times by request

Email HSRC’s Co-Director, Laura Sandt, at sandt@hsrc.unc.edu to schedule a call.

Grant Funding Opportunities

Education Wednesdays

CPRPO is posting monthly transportation education content on its website. It will range from brief reminders of current and recently updated laws to longer educational pieces about new innovative intersections and more.

Staff plans to highlight one here as well. See below for April's.

FYI

Did you know that NCDOT maintains more than 80,000 miles of roadway in North Carolina, making it the second largest state-maintained system in the United States!
