Funding Opportunities

CMAQ - Rolling Call

CPRPO can submit projects for funding each year through the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) program. This program provides funding for projects that will positively impact air quality in areas designated as non-attainment for national air quality standards or areas previously in non-attainment. Our area's eligibility extends to Orange County and the four northeastern townships (Baldwin, Center, New Hope, and Williams) of Chatham County, including the Town of Pittsboro.

The call for CMAQ projects is rolling, and our target annual funding amount is $158,845. This is Federal funding and requires a 20% match by the implementing local government or local agency. There are several eligible project types, but typically in our area, the funding has been used in the past for sidewalks and transit projects.

CPRPO must vote to approve which project (or projects) to submit, so please plan accordingly. Over the next couple of months, the eligible local governments (Orange & Chatham Counties and Town of Pittsboro) and eligible local agencies (Chatham Transit and Orange Public Transit) should consider any projects they may wish to submit and let CPRPO staff know about these project requests. If a project requires multiple years of funding (due to higher cost), this may also be an option we can discuss with NCDOT.

NCDOT Call for Pedestrian Safety Projects - Due November 14

NCDOT aims to increase pedestrian safety improvements implemented in smaller urban and rural areas across North Carolina by leveraging unobligated federal funds eligible for pedestrian safety projects.

NCDOT is issuing a call for eligible entities to submit and sponsor projects from October 6, 2025, through November 14, 2025. NCDOT will review submissions per funding program eligibility and scoring criteria. For selected projects, NCDOT will cover the non-federal match and administer the projects. Please have a look at the website for additional information and instructions for project submittals.

**Please note that of the approximately $24 million available statewide, $14 million is allocated to areas with less than 5,000 people.

Education Wednesdays

CPRPO is posting monthly transportation education content on its website. It will range from brief reminders of current and recently updated laws to longer educational pieces about new innovative intersections and more.

Staff plans to highlight one here as well. See below for October's:
