Dear 43rd Ward Neighbors,

To start this week’s newsletter, I want to bring attention to how we can support our strong senior community. Winter can be an isolating time for all Chicagoans and that hits our seniors particularly hard. In the 43rd Ward, we are proud to be home to numerous public and private centers for senior living. We are a caring, vibrant community for seniors with some of the city’s best parks, lakefront and public transit; but, of course, that quality of life is not as accessible in the winter. To help lift spirits, I want to ask you to join me in showing some extra love to the older adults in our lives and community during this season. The sky's the limit on what that can look like — from check-in calls or visits to shoveling and always food, think of a way to spread joy as we’re bundled up inside!

As we continue to work to boost membership in all of our Ward’s neighborhood associations this week I had the opportunity to join Lincoln Central Association (LCA) and Old Town Triangle Association (OTTA) for their annual meetings. With great food and drinks in hand, LCA & OTTA elected new leaders and brainstormed events and strategies to better connect neighbors.

I want to congratulate the outgoing neighborhood association presidents in our Ward: Sally Drucker of LCA, Dorothy “Dee” DeCarlo of OTTA, and Faraz Sardharia of Wrightwood Neighbors Association. I am so grateful to call Sally, Dee and Faraz friends. The impact each has had on our ward’s parks, charitable service, productive conversation and neighborly spirit, will be ever-lasting. We thank you all for your service!

Finally, just this morning I was thrilled to welcome the Lincoln Park Early Learning Center (LPELC) to the ward along with Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez, State Representative Margaret Croke, many local school and park leaders, and most importantly, our ward’s amazing pre-k kid constituency! Filling a corner storefront that has been vacant for years, LPELC will provide the 43rd Ward with 200+ additional pre-k seats at no charge to families. I strongly believe that universal pre-k makes our ward more accessible to families and our neighborhood school system stronger, and I am grateful to add LPELC to the list of shining universal pre-k options in our ward along with Alcott Elementary, Newberry Elementary and Oscar Mayer Magnet School. It is always an honor to speak to the vibrancy of our community, and here is a short clip from today:

I hope you’re all enjoying Winter Wonderland!

With Gratitude,

Alderman Timmy Knudsen

Upcoming CAPS Meetings

We work closely with the 43rd Ward’s local CAPS districts, which include the 18th (Near North) and 19th (Town Hall) Police Districts.

Our office is in frequent contact with officers from both of these districts and their local CAPS officers, who host a variety of community forums and events including beat meetings, informational settings, and expert panel discussions, as well as sending out community alerts when a pattern of crime is detected.

Beat Meetings are part of the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy and an excellent way to hear directly from CPD about your neighborhood. Meetings are held in the evenings every two months. Click here and find out your Police District and Beat number.
