CPS HAPPENINGS
A Monthly Update from the College of Professional Studies
With the end of the semester quickly approaching, efforts are now shifted to crossing that finish line. If you are succeeding in your classes, we applaud your efforts and hope you maintain this momentum. Some of us though, may be struggling to attend to our coursework with the current climate. Whether you are struggling or not, it is always important to check in with yourself. We want to thrive and not just survive!

On Thursday, April 16, Dr. Stacy Andes, Director of the Office for Health Promotion, met with CPS and graduate students to discuss the importance of self-care and its correlation with success. If you missed Dr. Andes’ presentation "Finishing the semester strong by taking care of yourself,” you can view the recording here . Below are some important notes from her session that highlight the findings from self-compassion researcher, Kristen Neff. In these challenging times, they apply more than ever.

  1. Practice Self-Kindness and not Self-Judgement. We are not perfect beings and it is inevitable that we will occasionally miss the mark. It is important to respond to these situations with kindness. Treat yourself as you would a loved one who is in the same situation. You would not berate them, so don’t beat yourself up over it either! Having that same compassion with yourself as you would have with others is not self-indulgent or selfish but actually enhances your mental well-being.
  2. Common Humanity versus Isolation. When someone encounters a challenging situation, it can bring up feelings of loneliness, inadequacy, and other insecurities. Recognize that these are universal feelings and engage in shared experiences. Honor those emotions and take time to check-in with loved ones. Schedule a virtual meet-up, play a Scattergories over FaceTime, or just use the old-fashioned telephone. Join the conversation and share your experience with your fellow CPS students during one of our Virtual Lounges!
  3. Mindfulness versus Over-Identification. When negative feelings creep up, it is very easy to immediately attempt to switch to the polarizing positive side or, even further criticizing yourself for thinking these thoughts. Don’t avoid the negative emotions but allow yourself to observe them with openness and clarity. This will allow you to create an internal balance. For more sessions on mindfulness, you can attend the Mindful Mondays Virtual Lounge.

We wish you the best of luck as you finish this semester strong!

Student Spotlight
Maryana Strosin ’20 CPS
I was born in Ukraine and lived there throughout my high school years. In 2006 I immigrated to the USA and started working at Villanova in 2011. I have met many great people here. A lot of them I look up to and hope to become like them one day. I hope that a degree in Leadership through the College of Professional Studies will help me with achieving my life goals. I am grateful for all the help and guidance I received from everyone in the College, University, my family and my friends. I hope I can pay back all the support by paying it forward.

I love spending time with my family. We enjoy evening walks and outdoor activities. Three things that I use for my spiritual health are prayer, music and a good book.

During these trying times it is the support I get from my husband and my daughter as well as my Villanova family that keeps me going. I have been blessed to have such amazing people in my life and it is with their help and understanding that I am able to continue my education.
