CPS Optix Celebrates Healthy Aging Month
With September being Healthy Aging month, CPS Optix wanted to share some tips for our senior patients.
When CPS Optix started our mobile service, it was mostly with seniors in mind. Many seniors don’t drive any more and suffer from what’s called “low vision”. That means that it can't be fixed or improved with glasses, contacts or surgery.
So being able to sustain their vision with their current glasses is really important and why we literally go the extra mile to ensure that seniors have an option to get new glasses when needed.
If you or somebody you love has low vision, there are some things you can to do make things easier:
Improve lighting – Seniors are more prone to falls. According to the CDC, more than three million elder Americans are treated for injuries due to falls annually. Better lighting can only help.
Add contrast – If you have a dark floor, put in light rugs. Use dark place mats at the table if dishes are a lighter color. Kitchen towels and cutting boards should contrast cutting boards. You get the idea.
Technology – Take advantage of voice command tools like Amazon’s Alexa or Google Assistant. Books on tape are also another great option for seniors who no longer see well enough to read.
Limit clutter – It kind of goes without saying but reducing the clutter in your senior’s home will also make getting around with low vision.
Of course, regular eye exams are critical for everybody so we’re using the most current prescription and glasses that optimize our vision.
