The

for 2018 EPIC Sustainable Neighborhood Youth Challenge, a program for CPS high school science and social studies teachers and their students. Student teams investigate local sustainability issues and community needs, receive in-person and online mentorship from Illinois Green Alliance professionals, and develop community-focused sustainability campaigns. In partnership with the CPS Office of Social Science & Civic Engagement, the EPIC Challenge is designed to be implemented by science or social studies teachers as a classroom-integrated service learning project. Teachers can also choose to integrate the EPIC Challenge into an existing club or other after-school context.
Program components:
Teachers participate in two evening PD workshops at the Nature Museum (Wed Feb 7 & Tue Mar 13, 2018) and receive ongoing support to implement the EPIC Challenge curriculum in their classroom. Teachers receive PD Clock Hours and a $150 stipend upon completion of the program.
Teachers and students team attend a Challenge Kick-off event and symposium at the Nature Museum on Saturday, February 24, 2018, where they learn from sustainability experts and work with Illinois Green Alliance mentors (transportation, lunch, and museum admission provided).
Illinois Green Alliance professionals provide in-person and online mentorship for the student teams throughout the development of their campaigns.
Student teams eligible for
$150 mini-grants to support research trips and campaign-related materials
Students use a digital platform (

The top three students teams are honored at Illinois Green’s annual

in mid-May 2018.

The
Stevenson Center
invites high school students to write original short opinion pieces (1,000 words or less) or multi-media presentations (of no more than 3 minutes and/or 100 megabytes in upload size) on topics that affect public policy. It is hoped that students will choose topics of deep concern to them. The range can be broad. Examples include, but are not limited to: climate change, campaign finance reform, immigration, civil rights, foreign policy or other contemporary subjects. Controversial subjects are acceptable, though the tone and language should remain respectful.
Please submit essays by March 15, 2018 on our website:
www.stevensoncenterondemocracy.org/students.
Blind copies of each essay will be read by a committee of three Stevenson Center advisors.
$250.00 will be awarded to the three winning essays. The first prize essay will be published on our website.
The authors of essays worthy of second tier commendation will not be published on the website or receive monetary awards but will receive letters of thanks for participation.
Essays should be both analytical and original. Judging will be determined by clarity and relevance of the thesis, development of the argument with precise, persuasive and well-organized evidence, creativity, impact, and summation of the message.
