Out with Plastic, In with Paper | | |
Effective January 1, 2026, the bag requirements at grocery and retail stores in California are changing! Senate Bill 1053 places a restriction on the types of bags distributed by most grocery stores, retail stores with a pharmacy, convenience stores, food marts, and liquor stores.
Beginning January 1, 2026, stores will only be allowed to distribute recycled carryout paper bags to customers for a minimum charge of ten cents ($0.10) per bag.
Beginning January 1, 2028, recycled paper bags distributed at stores must contain at least 50% postconsumer recycled materials.

| We want to recognize AK Laine for the amazing article in the Belmont Heights Community Association Newsletter! In her article, she focuses on her best tips and tricks for reducing food waste. Great work getting this information out to your neighborhood AK! | | PURPLE TO BLUE RECYCLING CART TRANSITION | |
The exchange of recycling carts is part of the statewide transition required by SB 1383, which mandates standardized cart colors: black for trash, green for organics, and blue for recycling. While Long Beach has not yet completed a citywide swap, some residents have already received blue carts when their purple carts were lost or damaged. The broader replacement effort is scheduled to begin in early February.
Please join us on Thursday, January 29, 2026, from 5:30-6:30 pm for a special webinar regarding the upcoming transition. We will cover when the transition is happening, how it is happening, and what will become of the beloved purple carts in their new retirement. There will be a Q&A at the end to address any questions you, our CRAs, may have!

Q: Where can I access the CRA Portal?
A: The CRA Portal is linked here.
Q: Can I access My Impact Page to report hours without going through the CRA Portal?
A: Yes! Please visit MyImpactPage.com and log in to report your hours.
Q: What if I get asked a question that is not about waste reduction, recycling, or composting?
A: At events led by us there should always be a staff member available to answer questions. If someone is asking questions unrelated to the topics we have covered in class, let the community member know you are a volunteer and please ask a staff member to answer the question. If staff is not available, please give them a business card to contact us.
Q: What if the event that I want to volunteer at is not related to waste reduction, recycling, or composting, can I still count that towards my hours?
A: Only events related to waste reduction, recycling, or composting count toward volunteer hours. Please email the Program Coordinator to get a volunteer activity approved with an organization that is not on our list of current partnerships.
Q: What should I wear when volunteering?
A: Please wear your name tag and t-shirt so that community members can easily identify you as a CRA.
Q: Are there incentives for volunteering?
A: Yes! We appreciate your time spent volunteering. We will be entering folks for a chance to win a gift pack for each milestone of hours you've completed (5,10, and on). So, if you've completed 10 hours, you get two entries.
