From the Director's Desk:
We are pleased to welcome the Tobacco Barn Distillery’s 700 MPH Bourbon event to TechPort on Saturday October 17. This charity event, postponed from its original May date due to the novel coronavirus, involves attaching eight, 15-gallon barrels of whiskey in modified tanks under the wings of a Sea Harrier jet, and flying at 700 mph to distill the liquor.
This year, the event salutes medical workers at MedStar and we’ll host a socially distanced “open house” for folks to watch this feat and have the opportunity, after bottling, to own a bottle. All proceeds go to the Semper Fi Fund, a nonprofit organization which assists combat wounded, critically ill and catastrophically injured members of all branches of the U.S. military and their families.

VETREPRENEUR PROGRAM Launched This Month at TechPort
|
With the unemployment rate among veterans in Maryland hovering between 14 and 18 percent in 2010, Joe Giordano decided to do something about it. He understands how tough the transition from military life to civilian life can be. Sometimes traditional employment just isn’t the right fit after leaving the service.
A retired master sergeant with 20 years in the U.S. Army and 17 years as owner of Consulting, Training and Development Services, Giordano wanted to tackle the challenges of unemployment among veterans and introduce them to the possibility of starting their own veteran-owned small business, like he did. He founded Project Opportunity, a free entrepreneurship training program designed solely for veterans, active duty or reserve personnel who want to start or expand their own business.

joined many others in aiding the cleanup process of their affected bottles.
In order to streamline the cleaning and relabeling of bottles, we put together an instruction set of what we found to be one of the most efficient processes.
Check it out and remember to support local business!

Blue Mesa is the latest in a long list of strategic alliances with local and state businesses that provide benefits to TechPort’s residents and Southern Maryland’s tech ecosystem.
“I’ve lived most of my life in Maryland, and Southern Maryland will always feel like home to me. I’m grateful to Tommy for the opportunity to help TechPort and the greater tech community here,” says Alan Alfano, Blue Mesa CEO. “It is essential to expose early-stage tech ventures to the widest range of strategic support possible, to give them the best chance of long-term success.”

This alignment between TechPort and Blue Mesa will include several types of advising and project-level assistance from Blue Mesa.
"TechPort is excited to have Dr. Alfano and Blue Mesa Strategies join us, as his expertise ranges from immunology and bioengineering to digital platforms,” says Tommy Luginbill, TechPort director. "This partnership will aid in further diversification of the Southern Maryland business environment.
Look out for Alfano to be using his hot desk on-site at TechPort or meet him virtually during one of his upcoming “Office Hours” sessions for TechPort residents/partners. Keep checking the TechPort website and social media for updates, and visit Blue Mesa Strategies on LinkedIn.
