CRC SUCCESS STORY

Making Things Right: $3,997 Returned to the Victim

Alex was referred to Community Restorative Court (CRC) in early 2023, by the District Attorney’s Office following a charge of Theft from a Business Setting. At the time of the offense, Alex was the manager of a local restaurant and, over the course of several months, stole $3,997.

Alex elected to participate in CRC. The conditions of his Repair Harm Agreement included: writing a letter accepting responsibility to his former staff, developing a monthly budget, and making restitution payments of at least $115 per month.

I am pleased to report that Alex has made his final restitution payment and has fully repaid the victim in the total amount of $3,997. CRC is proud to have walked alongside Alex throughout this process, while also ensuring that the harm to the victim was fully addressed and repaired.

PEACEMAKER REFLECTIONS

A Reflection from Sarah Shatz, Peacemaker

I am honored to be a Peacemaker with the Community Restorative Court. There is much power in Restorative Justice and I experience this in every circle. The circle keepers create a space for vulnerability that can lead to genuine repair that is rooted in community care. As Brian Stevenson tells us, "Each of us is more than the worst thing we've ever done”.

We all hold multiple identities and we all have been on each side of repair and harm. It’s a beautiful thing to show up as humans in this space, together. It feels so rare to orient this way and I love being part of it. Showing up, being vulnerable and human is how I’d like to show up in this world that we live in and to show up for a world I’d like to help co-create.

Thanks for letting me be a part of it!

A Reflection from Linda Pils, Peacemaker

The Circle starts with telling our names and something about each person, so I’ll start the we always do, my name is Linda Pils, I’m a retired primary teacher, so I’m a good listener and I believe in second chances because they were given to me.

I had a wonderful mother-in-law, but she often said, “I know what you’re thinking”. The truth is, no one really knows what we’re thinking and why we act the way we do.  But, in the circle, we find out. We are listening for the many truths that were present at that moment.  When I first completed the Peacemaker training, I wondered, “What can I bring to this amazing organization?  In the circle, I represent the community, can I be that person?”

What I have learned in the Circle, is that just as in the community, there are many voices, many life experiences that we can share. I have learned something from each Peacemaker that I’ve had the honor of working with at the CRC. I have also learned from the Respondents and victims, witnessing both anger, sadness, humility and forgiveness. At the end of one especially memorable Circle, the victim said to the respondent, “I don’t care about the money anymore, I have also been emotionally abused, I just want you to get the help you need.” The victim and respondent left and we sat, quiet and weeping.

The Circle is a sacred place where truths are shared and respected, where grace is given freely and second chances are the reward. I am so thankful to be working with all of our circle leaders who are committed to seeking justice with dignity.

BEYOND THE BOTTOM LINE

REFELCTION FROM KEEGAN, ASSET PROTECTION TEAM LEAD

This program creates space for meaningful dialogue, allowing businesses to clearly explain the real impact that theft has—not just on profit, but on the team members who come to work every day and the guests who rely on a safe, welcoming place to shop. By hearing directly from those affected, offenders gain a better understanding of how their actions ripple through the community, impacting jobs, trust, and neighborhood stability. The Community Restorative Court focuses on accountability, education, and restoration, and I’ve seen firsthand how this approach helps build awareness, responsibility, and a path forward that benefits everyone involved and makes Dane County a better place to live.

Keegan serves as Asset Protection Team Lead at Target and has participated in Restorative Circles with CRC.
