CRCA Advocacy Updates
CRCA @ NRCA’s Mid-Year Meetings – CRCA’s Executive Director, Bill McHugh, participated in the NRCA’s DC Fly-In and Membership Committee Meetings recently. Planning is well underway for the NRCA’s 2020 Roofing Day in DC Fly-In with big plans set. With over 400 participants in each of the last two years, there’s great momentum for even more to attend and provide Washington with the Roofing Industry’s opinions, needs, and more. Mark your calendars now for April 21-22, 2020. It will be here before we know it!

CRCA & NEW Energy Codes – Both the City of Chicago and State of Illinois have adopted new energy codes, which became effective for buildings permitted after  July 1, 2019. There has been no change to the new construction requirements for insulation on low sloped roofs, it’s still min. R-30 continuous insulation.  The changes were in roofing at existing buildings . All of Chicago’s 2016 Code Memorandum on Roofing was incorporated into Chicago’s new code. CRCA w orked at both the Chicago and Illinois Energy Code Development Processes to be sure that the codes allow for flexibility when new construction insulation thicknesses are technically infeasible.

CRCA & New Chicago Building Code The City of Chicago went through a lengthy process to update Chicago’s Building Code by adopting an amended version of the 2018 International Building Code. This means there will be a chapter in the Chicago Code on Roofing. There was no roofing chapter in the Chicago Municipal Building Code prior to this new code being adopted. Being a performance code, it expected the roof not to leak, fall down, etc. The new code might be used on buildings permitted as soon as this fall voluntarily, and will be mandatory for buildings permitted August 2020.  Watch for details on the new code at CRCA’s September Membership Luncheon where Chicago’s Building Commissioner Judy Frydland is presenting.

Questions for Commissioner Frydland? In order to make September's Membership Meeting as effective as possible for CRCA Members, CRCA is asking for questions ahead of the September 10 event. please send any questions you have for the Commissioner to [email protected] to help drive a dynamic conversation.

CRCA Speaks – CR CA will be spreading the word on the new Codes in Illinois and Chicago over the next several months. We’re speaking in Sept. in conjunction with Comm. Frydland , O ct., Dec., and of course, at CRCA’s Trade Show & Seminars in January. Watch the Enews for dates and locations.
