Civil Rights Department (CRD) Releases Results of First State-Sponsored Survey on Hate Acts Across California


CRD recently partnered with the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research's California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) to ask Californians about their experience with hate. According to the survey, an estimated 2.6 million Californians directly experienced at least one act of hate between 2022 and 2023.

CRD Announces Settlements Over Alleged Appraisal Discrimination Against Black and Latino Family


According to a complaint filed with CRD, an Oakland family's home was allegedly undervalued by $254,000 because of their race. The low appraisal allegedly resulted in the lender denying the family a loan to refinance their home, which made them feel like they had to sell their home and move out.

CRD Announces Settlement with Iowa-Based Trucking Company


CRD helped secure a settlement for a job applicant after a trucking company allegedly took back a job offer following a criminal history background check. Under California's Fair Chance Act, employers must do an individual assessment and show a direct connection between a conviction and the job before denying a job or taking back an offer.

New Guide: Reasonable Modifications and Housing

Have you ever needed to change your housing to make it more accessible? Ever had questions about how to request a reasonable modification, or what that even means?


Just in time for National Fair Housing Month, the Civil Rights Department has released a new guide on reasonable modifications in housing for people with disabilities. This guide will answer all of the above questions, and more. In California, access to fair housing is for everyone!


Reasonable modifications are changes made to a housing accommodation that provide a person with a disability equal access to enjoy their home.


Some examples of a reasonable modifications are:

  • Installing a grab bar by the shower
  • Widening a doorway and lowering cabinets
  • Adding braille to signs in common spaces
