CRD Urges Appellate Court to Protect and Preserve Key Legal Tool for Tackling Systemic Wage Discrimination

We're taking a stand for equal pay in California. CRD is supporting the 3,000+ women who have sued Oracle for alleged wage discrimination by asking the court to take their case. A trial court recently rejected their class action status. The court said it would be unmanageable for the case to go to trial, threatening Californians’ rights to fight pay discrimination.

CRD Secures Settlement Over Alleged Discriminatory Housing Ban in Inglewood

An Inglewood apartment complex will now make changes in response to allegations that they implemented a criminal history ban that wrongly impacted Black renters and violated state fair housing law. In addition to a $10,000 settlement to the complainant, property management will update their screening policies and take fair housing training to help prevent any future discrimination.

YEAR IN REVIEW

Thank You For a Great Year!

California Civil Rights Department Director Kevin Kish speaking at a conference for leaders in California Government.

We're thankful that you share our belief in civil rights and that you're part of our mission to make a California that's fair for everyone! We've had an amazing year connecting communities with resources and protecting the civil rights of people across the state. Here are just a few key highlights:

Protecting Californians from Discrimination

California Civil Rights Department Employee Christina helping the public at a Native American Day event at the California State Capitol.

Our legal team litigated several issues to protect the civil rights of people across California. Among other actions, we secured a $3 million settlement against Vasona Management over alleged housing discrimination affecting more than 2,000 families with children, the largest settlement of its kind in California. We also secured final court approval of a landmark $100 million settlement against Riot Games over alleged sex discrimination, harassment, and retaliation in the workplace.

Connecting More Californians with Support

California's First Partner celebrating with others at the California Versus Hate Launch event in Sacramento.

It's been an amazing launch year for California vs Hate, a new multilingual statewide hotline offering a safe, anonymous reporting and resource option for victims and witnesses of hate.

In its first six months, CA vs Hate received more than 500 reports of hate from people in more than 75% of California's counties. More than 60% accepted culturally competent support from our care coordinators, including access to counseling or legal aid.

Working to Reach All Communities in California

California Civil Rights Department staff Alee with educational materials at an outreach event in Central California.

Our staff traveled across the state this year to connect with California's diverse communities in new ways! We supported the launch of a new series of community forums hosted by the Commission on the State of Hate, covering a range of topics from the public health impacts of hate to school bullying and more.

Our Outreach and Education team also launched a monthly “Civil Rights 101” webinar series to help Californians learn more about their civil rights. The webinars are every third Wednesday from 11 AM to 12 PM PT.
