Support for People Impacted by Violence

Hands holding in support with the words Survivors of Violence and Family Members of Victims Right to Leave and Acoomodations.

Did you know workers impacted by violence have the right to take time off and get work accommodations for their safety? Below are some of the recently expanded protections for workers facing domestic violence, stalking, assault, or other types of violence.

Protected Work Leave

Workers can take time off in order to:

• Comply with court orders

• File restraining orders

• Leave a dangerous situation

• Get services or help from family

• Participate in safety training

• Get medical treatment

Work Accommodations

Employees can request changes at work for their safety such as:

• Schedule adjustments

• Installing new locks

• Transfer or reassignment

• Changing employee phone number

These rights also protect workers trying to help family impacted by violence. We’ve created a new guide to help survivors and their families learn more about their rights. It includes information about these protections, plus other resources for people impacted by violence like wage replacement, paid family leave, and state disability insurance.

35 YEARS OF THE ADA

Celebrating Disability Rights

President George H.W. Bush signing the Americans with Disabilities Act on July 26 1990.

This week in 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), banning discrimination based on disability.

The ADA was the world's first comprehensive civil rights law for people with disabilities, ensuring everyone has equal access in various areas of public life, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, and state and local government services.

Today, CRD is proud to help enforce protections like these for all Californians! Check out some of our disability rights resources to learn more about your rights, and how you can report discrimination.

Increasing Access to State Jobs

A screenshot of an informational slide from the "LEAP Module 1: How to Set Up a CalCareers Profile."

The Limited Examination and Appointment Program (LEAP) is designed to help Californians with disabilities get jobs with the state. Instead of taking the traditional state civil service exam, you can show your knowledge and skills for a position through on-the-job testing. Learn more about LEAP on the CalHR LEAP page and click the video above for steps on how to begin the LEAP process.
