SoCal Preschool to Pay $200,000 After Retaliating Against Teacher’s Aide for Speaking Spanish


After conducting an investigation, the Civil Rights Department (CRD) was able to help resolve a complaint from a teacher’s aide who said she was forced to quit her job at Leaps and Bounds preschool because of retaliation she faced for speaking Spanish while helping a coworker.

California vs Hate Pride Tour 2024: Standing Together Against Hate Across California


This year, California vs Hate took a bold stand at Pride events, showing up to support the LGBTQ+ community in the fight against hate. Our 2024 Pride tour brought us to communities in West Hollywood, Fresno, Sacramento, Chico, San Francisco, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Oakland, Orange County, Yuba City, and Palm Springs, reaching an estimated 1.4 million people who attended the celebrations statewide.

Leading the Charge in the Fight Against Hate

In case you missed it, check out our 2023 Annual Report! The report highlights our department's work to protect the civil rights of Californians. From a historic $100 million employment discrimination settlement with Riot Games to a $3 million housing discrimination settlement impacting thousands of Bay Area families, CRD continued to fight for the rights of Californians throughout 2023. Some key highlights include:

Case Work Highlights

5,765 civil rights investigations

• 788 settlements through conciliation, mediation, and litigation

• $116.5 million in relief for Californians impacted by discrimination

Outreach Highlights

• Reached 375,814 Californians through virtual and in-person trainings

• Launched a monthly “Civil Rights 101” webinar series

• 297 compliance letters issued to employers for discriminatory job ads
