New Resource for Renters

A group of neighbors chatting on a rooftop during a party at an apartment complex.

We're excited to share a new resource for renters! Our new FAQ covers your options if you're harassed by another tenant living in your apartment complex or other rental housing. Below are a few commonly asked questions our guide answers.

Q: Can jokes or playful comments become harassment?

Yes. Generally, if the comments target a protected characteristic like race or gender, and create a hostile environment, they can be unlawful.

Q: Is my landlord required to try & stop the harassment?

California law requires housing providers to stop harassment that makes tenants unable to enjoy their home.

Q: How do I document harassment from a neighbor?

Take pictures or videos, and write notes if it is safe to do so. This can be used to ask a landlord to stop the harassment or help you take legal action.
