WHAT'S NEW?

California Civil Rights Department (CRD) Sues Landlord for Refusing Long-Time Tenant's Section 8 Voucher

The renter, who had lived in the complex for years, claims she was forced to move out after her landlord wouldn't let her start using a Housing Choice voucher (Section 8). In California, landlords can't refuse to accept housing assistance to help pay for rent. It doesn’t matter if you didn’t need it when you originally signed your lease!

CRD Settlement Ends Homeless Shelter's Alleged Ban on Emotional Support Animals

Last year, a man filed a complaint with us alleging San Diego Rescue Mission unlawfully banned emotional support animals in its year-long rehousing program. California law requires housing providers to make reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities who have an emotional support animal that helps them manage their disability.

CLOSING THE PAY GAP

New Data Shows Women & People of Color Still

Among State’s Lowest Paid Workers

California has some of the nation's strongest equal pay laws, but our new pay data shows more work needs to be done to close the gap.

Released on International Equal Pay Day, we collected data on more than 8 million workers as part of a state law to combat pay discrimination. Key findings & takeaways include:

Women made up the majority of lowest paid workers, earning $32,239 or less

Fewer than 1 in 20 Latinos, and 1 in 10 Black and Native American workers were in top-earning positions

Most non-binary workers were in the lowest salary range, earning $32,239 or less

Pay gaps like these can result in hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost wages over the course of a single person’s lifetime. This is why we're committed to taking action to investigate and directly combat pay discrimination. Click below to learn more!
