April Luncheon's Tax Experts Gave Tips to Demystify Tax Changes
Above/L to R: Panelists Heidi Learner, Savills Studley; Robert S. Gilman, Anchin, Block & Anchin; Mayer Greenberg, Stroock & Stroock & Lavan; Jeffrey Bowden, Anchin, Block & Anchin; CREWNY Program Chair Alana Sliwinski, Troutman Sanders; CREWNY President Jaimee Nardiello, Zetlin & De Chiara.
The new tax laws have created as many questions as answers about what the changes will mean to tax payers and businesses. At CREWNY's April luncheon, four panelists - all tax experts - shared their expertise and insights in a program entitled, "Tax Reform & Real Estate: Demystified."

Among the advice: think carefully about converting to a corporation to take advantage of the new reduction in corporate tax rates as converting back can be complicated and create other taxable issues; there are many areas where clarification from the IRS is still needed; while mortgage interest and city/state income tax deductions are limited, rental property deductions are not; the 20% "automatic reduction" in business income is not actually automatic - and there are exceptions and conditions; brokers may or may not be eligible for the deduction dependent on income, but architects and engineers will qualify.
