What has CREWNY’s DEI Committee been up to in 2021?
|
|
CREWNY’s DEI Taskforce, now a Committee, has been busy developing a wide range of initiatives, activities, and programs!
A RECAP:
2020 – The DEI Taskforce, comprised of Sheri Best, Nayada Lugji, Julia Rocco, and Andis Woodlief, worked hard to develop a plan for a deep dive into Social Equity and Best Practices for expanding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in CREWNY and our professional community.
October 2020 – After months of research, the CREWNY DEI Taskforce created the 1st Social Equity Braintrust – This is a think tank and gathering of 60 leaders and thought leaders from diverse backgrounds including public and private-sector organizations, large and small corporations, anchor institutions, and communities in New York City’s five boroughs gathered to talk, listen, and learn from each other.
2021 – The Taskforce created an Action Plan for a new DEI Committee. The Action Plan includes strategies for building and maintaining Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in CREWNY’s:
- Membership;
- Mentorship;
- Programs; and
- Sponsorship efforts, including
- Metrics to measure and track our evolution.
Sheri Best and Nayada Lugji, current and incoming Chairs of the DEI Committee, collaborated with the Commercial Observer on its October 2021 DEI Forum. Sheri and Nayada created the content for the Forum’s Opening Panel Discussion. It featured CREWNY member Tammy Jones, CEO of Basis Investment Group; Denis Hickey, Global COO & CEO Americas, Lendlease; Mahbod Nia, CEO Mack Cali; and George Oliver, Chairman & CEO Johnson Controls. The panel was led by Carrie Spell-Hansson, from Global Human Equity Strategist and Consultant for Organizational Health and Growth led the panel.
Additionally, CREWNY was invited to sit on the Commercial Observer’s DEI Advisory Council. Held our first DEI Workshop led by Carrie Spell-Hansson, for membership, friends from AMFP (Assoc. of Medical Facilities Professionals), and the general public, providing an overview of the big picture aspects of understanding DEI.
The DEI Committee has begun outreach and collaboration with leadership and membership of RE and AEC Industry organizations representing diverse industry communities, including:
- Build Out Alliance – LGBTQ+ in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction communities
- REEC – Real Estate Executives Council, leaders in the Black and Latinx industry communities
- AHPCRE – Association of Hispanic Professionals in Commercial Real Estate
- Numerous Colleges and Universities in New York City with student populations from diverse and under-served communities
We have many exciting programs and activities planned for 2022!
