How CREW New York Leveraged its Community and Companies to Build a DEI Strategy
In 2020, social pushes for societal reform encouraged companies everywhere, including those engaged in the commercial real estate industry, to start diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs. DEI is vital to creating and maintaining a successful workplace.

At the same time, the CREW New York board of directors considered creating a DEI Committee to expand upon what was happening at its members’ places of work. The chapter’s home city is not only racially diverse but also diverse in age, gender expression, physical abilities/qualities, sexual orientation, religious status, educational background and work experiences.

The Economic Achievability of Local Law 97
On April 28, the Durst Organization hosted CREWNY’s luncheon and panel program at its beautiful space, known as Well& By Durst at 151 W. 41st Street.

Our Panel topic was The Economic Achievability of Local Law 97: Uplifting Communities, Benefits Beyond Profit Margins.

Alexandra Sutherland-Brown moderated this timely and captivating discussion. Ms. Sutherland-Brown is a principal and urban planner at Karp Strategies – an Urban Planning & Economic Development Advisory firm working with City agencies and
private firms, including NYCEDC; NYCHA; the Port Authority of NY & NJ; the SoHo Broadway Initiative; and the Brooklyn Public Library, among many others.

We had an exceptional panel comprised of:
  • Molly Mattimore, Deputy Executive Director, HSI – Housing & Services, Inc. – HSI is a 35-year-old nonprofit developer and manager of permanent supportive housing for the homeless in NYC. Its latest project, The Bedford, with 108 units in the Bronx, was one of the subjects of the discussion – built to LEED Platinum standards and designed to achieve compliance with Local Law 97.
  • Jenny Wu, Managing Director of Development at Jonathan Rose Companies – responsible for oversight, coordination, and management of her firm’s pivotal green development projects. Jonathan Rose Companies is recognized for its core principles, including a commitment to environmentally friendly, affordable housing projects and delivering innovative design, financing, and partnerships to deliver healthy, sustainable, transit-oriented housing.
  • Jose Coello, Sr. President, JC Energy Group Powered by Intech 21 – Jose has a deep history and commitment to advocacy for Minority & Women Owned businesses; At-Risk Youth; and low-income, underserved communities. For the past eight years, Jose has been focused on energy and sustainability in NYC by developing strategies for MWBE contractors, local workforce training, and providing employment in Energy Technology through his firm, which offers state-of-the-art technology that communicates with, monitors, and controls building management systems.
  • Carolyn Olson, Assistant Commissioner, NYC Dept of Health and Mental Hygiene DOHMH is one of the largest public health agencies in the world. Cari directs the Bureau of Environmental Surveillance and Policy’s multi-disciplinary team in innovative health research, legislative and regulatory actions, informatics, and communications across environmental health topics, including climate change and air quality.
The panel had a robust discussion about Local Law 97 and the challenges of developing new housing for homeless and low-income populations that is environmentally responsible, safe, healthy, and affordable. The costs and challenges of retrofitting technology solutions with a wide range of manufacturers' equipment in existing buildings to meet Local Law 97 requirements were also covered. It was an informative and lively panel discussion followed by many questions and comments on the broad-reaching impacts of environmental and housing conditions on individuals' physical and mental health from a fully engaged audience!
Support a Scholar Campaign
An opportunity to support scholarships for young women and to give in the name of fellow CREW members

The CREW Network Foundation scholarship program directly supports female students as they pursue university-level education that will lead to careers in commercial real estate. The Foundation grants 30 scholarships annually, totaling 196 scholarships and nearly USD 1.15 million distributed to date.

The scholarships, CREW connections and opportunities have been life changing for many young women. No other program has had a more significant impact on female students pursuing careers in our industry, and the generosity of CREW members and chapters make this possible.

Please donate to support our US or Canadian Annual Scholarship funds using the links below by June 30 to help us reach our $25,000 campaign goal. Through your gift, you may contribute in honor of a fellow CREW member and help the New York chapter reach the Chapter Challenge of having 50% of our members donate to the Foundation. When you choose to make a gift in honor of an individual and provide their information on the giving form, Network will notify them of your gift.

The Development Lifecycle: How Do You Fit In
As part of an interactive workshop program, a panel of design/construction experts will discuss their lifecycle roles, experience and observations. Audience members will then join the conversation to discuss where they are and where they want to be in the lifecycle, what opportunities are emerging and how they can do business together.

Featured speakers include Leah Blackman, Senior Vice President, Construction Management & Builders, Inc; Deborah Farahmand, Beachwold Residential LLC; Claire Gondon, Project Manager JDS Development; and Jessica Jeffrey, Director, MACRO, A Savills Company.
