Program Spotlight
Join CREWNY and a panel of industry leaders for a discussion on NYC’s changing retail landscape, leasing patterns, and the trends that are reshaping the physical retail experience at the start of a new decade.

The past four years have seen tectonic changes in NYC’s retail landscape: Westfield World Trade Center; the reinvention of Brookfield Place; Hudson Yards’ opening; shifting leasing patterns along key retail corridors; and retail trends bringing more food, wellness, amenities, digital integration, and experiential activations. Our diverse group of panelists will touch on the current status of NYC retail development from their unique perspectives, and what changes for physical retail and retail leasing may lie ahead as we enter the third decade of the 21st century.

CREW Convention Scholarship Winner Report
Linda Luo
Project Coordinator
JLL
Attending this year’s CREW Convention in Orlando, Florida, gave me a clearer picture of what networking looks like and the positive effects it has created for all CREW members. The convention captured a wide array of opportunities for us to discuss business deals, make introductions, learn the latest industry trends and develop key leadership skills. No matter what one’s interest is or her career development stage, CREW convention has something for everyone.

Right before the marketplace and welcome reception, a group of women professionals involved in multifamily businesses came together. Being involved in multifamily investing myself, I organized a multifamily meetup. This allowed women professionals to meet and discuss the services they provide and share what they do. We also spoke about creating opportunities for women to invest in real estate, either actively or passively.
To top off my amazing excursion experience, the lunch session with Carey Lohrenz was to die for. Her motivational message was that one should feel the fear and go forward anyway because not taking a risk is the biggest risk we can take. Thus, we should show up with a positive attitude, adapt accordingly, seek progress and “launch at 80% because, yes, 80% is good enough.”

A particular piece of advice she gave us stuck with me since the convention and I’ve implemented it into my morning routine since returning home. She recommended picking up three Post-Its every morning and filling each one with an important task or goal for that day. This way we start each day with the top three most important tasks/goals.

Finally, this experience was made possible through the generosity of CREW New York. This was my second CREW Convention and I look forward to attending the one next year. I highly recommend attending at least one. I came back from Orlando, Florida with new connections and friends, business opportunities and unforgettable experiences. That’s the power of the CREW Network!
CREWNY to Launch Ambassadors Program for New Members
CREWNY would like to make sure our newer members and visitors feel welcomed at our events. We are asking members to sign up to be CREW Ambassadors. CREW Ambassadors will be matched up with a new member/visitor and are asked to greet them and introduce them to other members and business contacts at an event, particularly luncheons and breakfasts.

If interested, please send an e-mail to [email protected].
UCREW Mentoring Event
On Friday, November 8, the Career Advancement Committee hosted the 2nd Annual UCREW program at Trepp, LLC. Twenty students attended from various universities, including Harvard, Columbia, Baruch College, NYU and Fordham, to name a few.

Thank you to the CREW New York members who took time out of their day to take part in the program and engage with the students. The feedback we received was extremely positive, and the students thought it was different from most other events they had attended.

A highlight for many was the complimentary professional photo taken for their resumes and LinkedIn profiles, sponsored by CREW New York. UCREW Subcommittee Chair Erin Timko already started thinking of ways to enhance the program for 2020.
Students gather with CREWNY mentors AnnMarie DiCola, CEO, Trepp LLC; Wendy Berger, Partner, Cole Schotz; Erin Timko, Director, Academic and Industry Relations, Trepp LLC; Kenne Shepherd, Kenne Shepherd Interior Design Architecture; Wendy Rossi, Senior Project Manager, Akerman LLP; and Maria Elefante, Senior Vice President, Treasury, Arbor Realty Trust, Inc.

Hoffmann Architects Shares White Paper on the New York Climate Mobilization Act
On April 18, 2019 – the New York City Council passed the Climate Mobilization Act, a suite of laws aimed to meet the city’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The historic legislation makes New York the first city in the world to place hard limits on the emissions of large buildings, and it has been touted by supporters as being the most ambitious climate legislation enacted by any city to date. For building owners, the new laws mean new requirements for everything from building emissions to roof materials, and while some of the changes go into effect years in the future, others start as soon as this fall. The time to become familiar with the new rules is now, as achieving compliance may take substantial advance planning and budgeting, and, especially for older buildings, no small measure of ingenuity.
