Four Selected for Northwestern Mutual Tech Minicamp

Four talented CRJ students have been selected for Northwestern Mutual’s 2021 Tech Minicamp! With only 14 spots available in the minicamp, we are proud that Trailblazers make up almost 30% of the participants. As one of the area’s largest direct providers of financial security planning, Northwestern Mutual will engage CRJ students in unique opportunities to tackle tough technology challenges faced by a large corporation, their clients and employees. These CRJ juniors and seniors will explore cyber security, big data, predictive analytics, statistics and more as they build networks and learn from local tech professionals.
Through the skills developed during the seven week camp, these teens will design and pitch an app to solve a current need at Northwestern Mutual. Following this program, participants will be eligible to apply for a seven week summer internship at Northwestern Mutual.

PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE
A REFLECTION FROM ANDY STITH

Big Bend National Park was the highlight of my family's 4,000 mile spring break road trip the week after Easter. Like so many people, we were very eager to travel after many months at home. A trek to a national park in remote, southern Texas checked all the vacation boxes for us while taking into consideration current COVID-19 precautions.
One of the historic places highlighted in the park that caught my attention was an old outpost. The La Harmonia Company was founded in 1918 and served the region as a trading post. It supplied those who lived in the region with everything from food to clothing to medicines to animal pelts to saddles and more. It was a vital resource to the region. I found it intriguing that the owners decided to name their store in south Texas in the early 1900's La Harmonia. No doubt, this name was a savvy business move. The story also goes that the owners wanted their store to be a place of welcome, peace, and harmony in what seemed like a chaotic frontier at times. The spirit behind La Harmonia reminded me of our mission at Cristo Rey Jesuit.
We are certainly a stop on the journey for many. Just like La Harmonia, Cristo Rey Jesuit is a place of promise and hope to a broad collection of people - students and families, staff members and corporate partners, donors and volunteers - who are brought together out of a recognition of the need for our mission. Our modern frontier can be chaotic, in different, but equally challenging ways. Cristo Rey is a school that works to bridge important relationships between individuals who may be coming from different places of our city. La Harmonia was an outpost that expressed a vision for its time that went beyond its place as a trading post. Cristo Rey Jesuit, similarly, represents a message and vision for our city that makes this place so much more than a school in our community...and we don't have to drive 4,000 miles for it!

When clubs were announced at the end of the first semester, senior Christina E. spearheaded an effort to establish the school’s first Forensics team. This inaugural team is comprised of five students and coached by Theatre teacher Catie O’Donnell.
“We are incredibly proud of the founding Forensics team at CRJHS! This truly was a student led effort. They put together their competitive speeches only a few weeks before the first tournament, and blew the judges away with their performances,” O’Donnell said.
Their season is a huge success with all five students making it to the District level tournament, and three students, Amir S., Christina E. and Ruby M., competing in the State tournament! The students submitted their state video performances and results will be announced later this month. Congratulations to the Forensics team on a successful first season!

Led by veteran head coach Rich Dorn, the boys Trailblazer soccer team began preparing for the alternative fall soccer season months ago with their first practices on CRJ’s brand new soccer field. The team continued their conditioning through the winter and into this spring.
On April 1st, the boys team won their first home game on the new field by a score of 8-0 over Tenor High School. Off to a strong seasonal start, CRJ’s varsity boys team record is 5-0 and they have outscored their opponents 27-1. Six games remain in their scheduled season. Congratulations to Coach Dorn and the varsity boys team for kicking off their season in such dominant fashion.

Eight Cristo Rey Jesuit seniors were awarded the selective All-In Milwaukee Scholarship recently. Competing against nearly 300 applicants for this scholarship, these eight CRJ Trailblazers were among a small class of recipients. “All-In Milwaukee is proud of the perseverance and progress of our scholars during this challenging time, and we are thrilled to welcome our new scholars this spring,” said All-In Milwaukee Executive Director Allison Wagner.
Rodrigo D., Abigail R., Ethan M., Nailea E., Marily F., Yulian P., Zykia B., and Magaly D. will each receive $18,000 over four years on top of the student support services to ensure their success in college and in life. Both Ethan M. and Yulian P. have decided to go to Marquette University, while the other six students are finalizing their decisions this month.
