CRJ ALUM JOINING GE HEALTHCARE'S

EDISON PROGRAM

Senior year of college can be a stressful time as students juggle completing their fourth year of college while beginning their job search. Fortunately for Cristo Rey Jesuit alum Juan Esparza ‘20, he is ahead of the game. As he prepares to graduate from UW-Madison in the spring of 2024 with a double major in Computer Engineering and Computer Science, he already has his post-graduate plans lined up.

I will be joining GE HealthCare as part of their Edison Engineering Development Program. Through this 2-year program, I will partake in 3 distinct rotations. Some of my interests for these rotations include artificial intelligence, embedded systems, and image processing/reconstruction. I will also be pursuing a master’s degree as part of the program, most likely in Engineering Management,” said Esparza.

Esparza joined GE HealthCare as a software engineering intern in May 2022 and returned in May 2023. Esparza is using his technological knowledge in the healthcare industry because he’s able to work on products that have a direct impact on people’s health. “The industry is constantly evolving by integrating new technologies. This allows me to be in the forefront of new and innovative products while seeing the positive impact on people’s health.

Esparza cites the Corporate Work Study Program for his success after graduating from CRJ. “The Corporate Work Study Program exposed me to the field of technology. During my four years of CWSP, I worked in software development, cybersecurity, and technology support at PKWARE and Johnson Controls. CWSP also taught me the skills of adaptability which helped me successfully complete my college internships. Since the internships are only a couple months during the summer, being able to adapt quickly was necessary to complete the assigned projects. I’m grateful that CRJ and CWSP introduced me to new and challenging environments while giving me the tools to succeed.

PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE
A REFLECTION FROM ANDY STITH

Adrian Mora '19 talks with President Andy Stith during a All-In Milwaukee event in September.

Some phrases that teenagers use become popular overnight and then go out of style as quickly as they come in. Other words are timelessly used by every generation of teenagers. “My mom made me” is one of those phrases that I probably would have heard from kids a hundred years ago and still hear from our students today. Usually, a teenager says it in response to something they know they have to do, don’t really want to do, but deep down understand that it is for the best…and usually mom tells them!

I most recently heard this expression at a lunch event where Adrian Mora, one of our graduates, was a featured speaker. I had the opportunity to visit with Adrian immediately after the event, and he shared how Cristo Rey played a pivotal role in his life. He told me that as an eighth grader he absolutely did NOT want to attend Cristo Rey Jesuit. At the time he was looking at high schools, Cristo Rey was brand new and no one knew much about it. Adrian’s friends were all going to other places for high school. He’d have to get up earlier and the school year was longer than most schools. Adrian also wasn’t crazy about the uniform expectation either as he was coming from a public school where a uniform wasn’t required. He told me how vigorously he argued with his mom that he did not want to attend Cristo Rey Jesuit, but he concluded, “my mom made me…and it’s the best decision we could have made.”

Adrian expressed to me that he felt he developed good study habits and a good academic work ethic while at Cristo Rey Jesuit. He also credited the school’s Corporate Work Study Program with vaulting him into a career track that shaped his trajectory through the present day. Through CWSP, Adrian worked at Northwestern Mutual for three years while at Cristo Rey Jesuit. He was admitted to Marquette University and earned the prestigious All-In scholarship award. He continued to work at Northwestern Mutual in college and midway through his college tenure, at the encouragement of his advisors, he accepted an internship at Baird that ultimately aligned with his major more closely. Adrian graduated this past May from Marquette University having accepted a job at Baird as a portfolio analyst.

Adrian spoke to me about how difficult it was at times, as a first generation college student, to navigate his way through his educational journey. He was thankful for all the mentors in his life that had helped him get to this point. He told me that as he looked back over the past eight years he could see how the opportunities Cristo Rey Jesuit opened up for him linked together to help get him to where he was today. Thank goodness for our moms who make us do things we sometimes don’t like to do for our own good. Looking back, Adrian is very grateful for his mom making him come to Cristo Rey Jesuit, and we are too! Thank you, Mrs. Mora.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP WORKSHOP PREPARES TRAILBLAZERS FOR INNOVATION-FILLED FUTURE

Students complete a problem-solving exercise during the Youth Entrepreneurship Accelerator workshop.

Part of Cristo Rey Jesuit’s mission is to prepare students to succeed beyond college. For the Trailblazers that are interested in starting their own business, the Youth Entrepreneurship Accelerator (YEA) workshop gave them a chance to see what success would look like. Partnering with City on a Hill, CRJ hosted the workshop in our Northwestern Mutual Innovation Center on September 12th.

The YEA allowed CRJ students to be engaged in hands-on learning and inspiration through entrepreneurship programming, individualized coaching and mentoring and access to an online network of support. Entrepreneurs from various local organizations shared networking tips and worked with the students on team-building exercises. As someone who is interested in starting my own business after college, to have these local entrepreneurs come to CRJ to talk to us and answer any of our questions was really amazing!” said Senior Kimberly.

The YEA program also connects to the Ignatian Innovation Framework at Cristo Rey Jesuit by helping students have extracurricular opportunities to develop their creative problem-solving and entrepreneurship skills. Freshman Maria shared, “I love that CRJ can offer programs like this! It makes me feel like I did the right thing when picking to attend this high school."

Thank you to City on a Hill for partnering with CRJ to provide this opportunity for CRJ students, and help them as they prepare for their own Trailblazing future.
