CLASS OF 2030 BEGIN CRJ JOURNEY AT SUMMER BRIDGE

The transition from middle school to high school can be a little intimidating to downright terrifying for some students - especially when starting at a new school with new classmates, teachers, and programs. This is the challenge facing each CRJ incoming freshman, and it’s the reason for CRJ’s Summer Bridge program. The four-week Summer Bridge prepares incoming freshmen for everything that a CRJ education entails while building community with their new classmates and teachers. Assistant Principal for Student Success Dr. Marygrace Tyrell shared, "The purpose of Summer Bridge is to welcome new students to Cristo Rey, introduce them to our mission and values, and allow students to get to know each other so that when the school year begins, they feel ready to develop their God-given gifts so that they can become men and women for and with others."

Throughout the summer, these rising ninth-graders have engaged in academic classes focused on Math and English while also preparing for their future career experiences through the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP). Bridge highlights included a Speed Networking lunch with local business leaders as well as an exciting campus tour of Marquette University. Students also competed in an entrepreneur challenge where they worked in groups to create and pitch their own small businesses.

During the four weeks, the 128 new Trailblazers not only learned English and Math, they developed new friendships and confidence. Students who didn’t know each other before Summer Bridge could be found eating lunch together, helping each other remember their locker combinations and even singing 'Baby' by Justin Bieber together on the learning stairs! Incoming freshman Alexis V. shared, “I've had a lot of fun meeting my classmates during Summer Bridge, and all the teachers really made me feel welcome. I’m really excited and happy to be here at Cristo Rey!”

We look forward to welcoming the Class of 2030 - and every Trailblazer - back to Cristo Rey Jesuit on August 19th for the first day of school!

PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE

A REFLECTION FROM ANDY STITH

We do a lot of surveys of different stakeholders at Cristo Rey Jesuit, but the one I look forward to reading the most is the exit survey administered to all our seniors right before they graduate. I know seniors have opinions and that by the end of their senior year, many feel very comfortable sharing them! What I really appreciate about this is that they are sincere and truthful and give us a good barometer of where we are strong and still can grow with respect to the student experience.

When we receive the results of our senior exit survey, we can see how we compare to the other 40 schools in the Cristo Rey Network. The survey measures student perceptions of school culture and belonging, our academic and Corporate Work Study Program experiences, and our college counseling and campus ministry experiences. I was pleased to see that our seniors rated us as highly or higher than the Cristo Rey Network average on 13 of the 15 questions asked in these categories.

Our Corporate Work Study Program experience was cited as a large component of professional formation for our seniors. Three quarters of our seniors chose their intended college major because of their experience in the Corporate Work Study Program. The influence of this experience surpassed personal interest or the influence of family and friends as reasons for choosing a major.

Seniors wrote about learning many lessons at CRJ as well. Managing the increased demands and expectations of school work, turning work in on time, handling more rigorous coursework, learning it’s okay to ask questions, the overall importance of communication, and utilizing all available resources to address a challenge were all mentioned. They noted the importance of trying new things and taking risks, appreciating the special, little moments during a day, overcoming failure, and learning how to work and communicate in their jobs.

Seniors commented on the deep connections they formed with one another through participation in many of our extra-curricular activities like theatre and cheer team. As a leader of a Catholic and Jesuit high school, I was heartened to learn that BY FAR their most cherished memories were from their Kairos retreat experiences. As a result of this retreat many students commented that they felt closer in their relationship with God and strengthened bonds with one another.

Lastly, they noted the importance of those around them helping them through their high school journeys. One student wrote, “I think that the people I hung out with taught me the type of person I want to be.” Another senior shared, “I have learned to love above all…I am truly grateful for meeting the people I have met, because they were the people I needed to meet to become who I am today. The sole thing I hope for in my life is to continue to live for God. Knowing His goodness in my life, I will walk the humble and passionate life God has for me.”

We work hard to understand our student experience by listening to our students, challenging our students, and supporting our students to, ultimately, help them grow into the young men and women God created them to be. We know we’ll continue to grow as an organization to more effectively meet the imperative of our mission. With these senior exit survey results, however, I know we are on the right path!

GET TO KNOW A CRJ STAFF MEMBER:

Judy Zugel, Humanities Teacher

How long have you been working at CRJ?

I have been here for four years!

What is your favorite part of working at CRJ?

I love the fact that we encourage our students to have opinions, to have a voice, to care for themselves, others, and the community. CRJ offers many opportunities for the students to become involved in current issues. Our clubs and orgs encourage students to take a stand on issues that affect them and their community, to become leaders, and to support each other. The graduating class of 2026 was the first class that I taught at CRJ. It is amazing to see the growth, the confidence, the humility, the strength, and the love in each student. They are our future, and it is up to us to support and to encourage each one of our students.

What is a challenge that you face?

One challenge is AI and the evolving technology in our world today. Technology is an extremely important facet, but at what expense? AI and technology can be useful tools, but we want our students to have critical thinking skills. I often tell my students that "productive struggle" is okay. Productive struggle encourages the students to have better comprehension, stronger problem solving skills, and the ability to "think on their feet". The challenge is to find the balance that ultimately supports our students.

What about CRJ’s mission resonates most with you and why?

I enjoy the combination of a Jesuit faith community, the strong academic vision, and the workplace opportunities for the students. CRJ believes in "Cura personalis". Cura personalis is Latin for "care for the whole person." This is not just a phrase, but a belief. From the moment our students arrive as incoming freshmen at the Summer Bridge program to the day they graduate, the CRJ community is wholeheartedly supporting each and every student as a whole person.

Fun fact about yourself:

I am a proud member of the Prince Fan Club (Purple Rain is the best soundtrack ever!). And, my dream is to have a Hobby Farm with dogs, goats, and chickens.
