Occupational Therapy Graduate Students Help Keep Rehabilitation Measures Database Current

Through a unique collaboration with the Center for Rehabilitation Outcomes Research (CROR) at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, occupational therapy graduate students at University of Illinois Chicago contribute to the Rehabilitation Measures Database by updating existing rehabilitation measure summaries and developing new ones. This partnership provides students with valuable hands-on research experience while helping keep an important clinical resource current and accessible.

Focus Groups Highlight Gaps in Readiness to Return Home After Inpatient Rehabilitation

for Spinal Cord Injury

In an international study led by CROR, people with spinal cord injury (SCI), their care partners and SCI clinicians participated in focus groups to share their experiences with inpatient rehabilitation and returning home. The findings reveal a consistent mismatch between early discharge timelines and patients’ preparedness for life at home, underscoring the need for more individualized transition planning.

Meet Our CROR Collaborators

Can the brain learn new ways to help the body move after spinal cord injury? Shirley Ryan AbilityLab research scientist Dalia De Santis, PhD, is exploring how the brainstem might play a role in restoring movement when traditional pathways are damaged. By pairing auditory stimulation with physical therapy,
her research is uncovering new possibilities for improving mobility in people with SCI.

For decades, psychologist Marcel Post, PhD, has helped reshape how researchers and clinicians understand life after SCI — not just physically, but psychologically and socially. The De Hoogstraat Rehabilitation and Utrecht University researcher is now collaborating with CROR on an international study examining how inpatient rehabilitation length of stay affects outcomes for people with SCI.

Rehabilitation Measures Database Update

The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Rehabilitation Measures Database (RMD) continues to expand, now including 602 measure summaries.

Most recently, the Job Content Questionnaire was added, a measure summary created by students in the University of Illinois Chicago occupational therapy graduate program. The UIC students also updated summaries for the Community Balance & Mobility Scale and the Hip Disability & Osteoarthritis Outcomes Score. Students from the occupational therapy graduate program at Concordia University Wisconsin, updated the summary for the Geriatric Depression Scale.

Seeking Research Participants: Flying With a Disability

Researchers at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, Northwestern University and Indiana University want to learn more about the air travel experiences of people with physical disabilities. We are seeking participants for focus groups and a study that involves documenting a trip through photographs and interviews.

INside the OUTcomes: A Rehabilitation Research Podcast

What happens when people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) use storytelling to share their lived experiences? In this episode of INside the OUTcomes, we explore how the simple, creative act of storytelling can have a profound impact.

Join us as we step inside Tellin’ Tales of Parkinson’s Disease, a unique storytelling project of the Parkinson’s Disease & Movement Disorders program at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Led by Tekki Lomnicki — founder and artistic director of Tellin’ Tales Theatre — the program helps participants turn personal experiences into meaningful stories that build community. Listeners will hear from Tekki, along with Marty Maibuecher, a participant in the PD storytelling group, and Eric Espinoza, program and outreach coordinator, who leads the hospital's PD support groups.
