App Aims to Help People With

Spinal Cord Injury Meet Exercise Goals at Home

Researchers at the Center for Rehabilitation Outcomes Research (CROR) at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab have developed “PT Pal,” a mobile app designed to help people with spinal cord injury (SCI) exercise at home with SCI-specific guidance, videos and interactive support. Now in the final phase of a multi-year study, the team is testing whether the full interactive app along with optional motivational coaching help individuals with SCI improve their strength, aerobic capacity and long-term adherence to fitness routines.

New Study Reveals Why Some Employers Successfully Retain Workers With Disabilites — and Others Don't

Why do some employers excel at retaining workers with physical disabilities, while others struggle? A new study, led by researchers at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, disovered differenes between employers who provide strong supports and accommodations — and those who do not and further highlighted actionable strategies to help organizations strengthen inclusion and improve long-term retention.

CROR Staff & Collaborators

Clinical psychologist Jane Duff, a longtime leader in SCI care at the United Kingdom’s National Spinal Injuries Centre, is heading the U.K. arm of an international CROR study examining how inpatient rehabilitation length of stay influences SCI outcomes. Her career, shaped by a deep commitment to social justice and patient-centered care, has made her a key partner in this global effort.

Physical therapist Erin Walaszek, PT, DPT, brings years of clinical expertise in cardiology and rehabilitation to her work at CROR, where she now helps lead participant recruitment for MENTOR, an online wellness program designed to support the health and well-being of people with mobility limitations. Her path from bedside care to research reflects her passion for improving access to safe, effective exercise for those with complex conditions.
