Cornerstone Bank donates $50,000 to Worcester Community Action Council
Funds will go towards the organization’s Emergency Fuel Fund
WORCESTER Mass. – Cornerstone Bank, a community bank with 10 locations throughout Central Massachusetts, has donated $50,000 to the Worcester Community Action Council (WCAC) in support of its Emergency Fuel Fund. Due to higher fuel costs and an increase in calls for support from the community, the emergency fund has been depleted. In September and October of 2021, WCAC helped over 350 households with payments totaling more than $150,000. This is the third consecutive year Cornerstone Bank has donated to WCAC.
“We are proud to support WCAC’s mission of helping those struggling to heat their homes as the weather begins to trend colder,” said Cornerstone Bank CEO Todd Tallman. “As a community bank, we put a major focus on bettering the lives of our neighbors. We were happy to answer WCAC’s call for help to ensure the people they serve will be warm this winter.”
The Worcester Community Action Council is one of 23 community action agencies in Massachusetts with the mission of helping people toward economic self-sufficiency through programs, partnerships, and advocacy. To help break the cycle of poverty for tens of thousands of people annually, WCAC provides opportunities for energy assistance, early education and care, financial empowerment, positive youth development, and career pathways.

North Brookfield, MA—The free refreshments, fun holiday games and, best of all, free photos with Santa Claus are back! It’s Santa Day on November 26 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at North Brookfield Savings Bank’s Belchertown branch, 4 Daniel Shays Highway.
Santa Day visitors can enjoy free cider and cookies, and Santa will pose for free photos with children and families. In addition, NBSB’s popular Reindeer Search game returns for another year. Santa’s nine reindeer will be hidden around the branch and children will receive a sticker each time they find one, with six stickers earning a goodie bag.
As part of its Annual Toy Drive, NBSB will be accepting new, unwrapped toys for children ages infant to 12 years old, in support of the Belchertown Police Association’s toy program. Donations are welcome, but not required. The Bank will match every dollar donated and contribute $1 for every toy collected, up to $250 per branch.
“We are so thrilled to hold our Annual Santa Day once again, that has been on a hiatus since 2020, like much else due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. We are excited to get back in the communities and to provide special events and offerings like we have for over 160 years,” said North Brookfield Savings Bank, Digital Marketing Strategist, Nicole Syriac. “This is a special opportunity to visit with our customers, friends, and neighbors, and to help support the community, families and most importantly, children in need.”

Second Chance Named 2022 Top-Nonprofit by GreatNonprofits
Award Based on Community Recommendations
EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (November 10, 2022) — Second Chance Animal Services announced today it has been named a “2022 Top-Rated Nonprofit” by GreatNonprofits, the leading website for community recommendations of charities and nonprofits.
Second Chance serves pets in Massachusetts and beyond, helping over 40,000 pets a year.
“We are honored to be named a 2022 Top-Rated Nonprofit,” says Second Chance founder and CEO Sheryl Blancato. “We are so grateful for the community’s support that makes our work possible, keeping pets in their homes with the people they love through our four Community Veterinary Hospitals and helping homeless pets get the care they need to find their new homes.”
The Top-Rated Nonprofit Award is based on the rating and number of reviews that Second Chance received from volunteers, donors and aid recipients. The reviews share loving stories of pets adopted from and cared for by the nonprofit. “Got my dog from them years ago, and still use (them) for his vet care and he is the best thing that ever happened to me.”
Second Chance is a great example of a nonprofit making a real difference in their community,” said Perla Ni, CEO of GreatNonprofits, “Their award is well-deserved recognition not only of their work, but the tremendous support they receive, as shown by the many outstanding reviews they have received from people who have direct experience working with Second Chance.”
GreatNonprofits is the largest donation website for nonprofits and where people share stories about their personal experiences on more than 1.6 million charities and nonprofits. The GreatNonprofits Top-Rated Awards are the only awards for nonprofits determined by those who have direct experience with the charities – as donors, volunteers, and recipients of aid.

We Must Fix a Broken Federal System That Denies Veterans Access to Medicinal Cannabis
Expanded access to medical cannabis has a track record of breaking the devastating cycles of PTSD, pain, and opioid prescription abuse.
Authored by: Bob Patton, Co-founder and Chairman of the Board for Green Meadows
|
|
Veterans face unique challenges, from re-entry post combat, pain, and PTSD, to the over-prescription of opioids, subsequent addiction, and the devastating cycle of physical, mental and emotional pain that is perpetuated as a result. These systemic challenges that are creating barriers to veterans getting access to safe, natural remedies have devastating unintended, but undisputed, consequences, including veteran opioid abuse, overdoses and suicides, which are at all-time highs in the veteran community. Yet, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) continues to rely heavily on addictive prescriptions. Unfortunately, it’s not just medicinal access that is harmed by the federal government’s stance on cannabis, but education too. Through veterans’ education, support events and informal conversations, Green Meadows has sought to understand the unintended consequences of some of these historic laws and policies, and how we as a community can help bring these issues to the forefront.
I led our family’s charge in launching and establishing a legal cannabis business in Massachusetts, and one of the reasons we were so passionate about getting into this space is because of how cannabis can support PTSD, anxiety, insomnia, pain, and a variety of other ailments, especially in the veteran community. Right now, a lot of this consumer education is currently happening at the dispensary level through the budtenders, because federal law prohibits research into the medical benefits of cannabis. We can’t write a prescription for somebody, but we can help drive conversations and education to help empower veterans to feel comfortable with coming to a dispensary to see if it is the right option for them.
Danny Harper, Director of Wholesale for Curaleaf Massachusetts explains that, “The United States Department of Veterans Affairs hasn’t changed; it’s all about prescriptions and more prescriptions. I’ve lost friends to suicide and drug overdoses because sometimes the VA gives you too much medicine, or they don’t give any at all and these people go to the streets to look for something else.” He added, “Moving towards cannabis allowed me to be me again. Microdosing helps me, and other veterans, have a chance to being a functioning member of our society. Medical cannabis saved me.”
David Adams, Southbridge Town Councilor and President of the Southbridge Veterans Council adds that the divided politics in Washington have sidelined many hopes that federal legalization could begin to give veterans across the country access to medicinal cannabis that could safely and effectively improve their quality of life. This Veterans Day, he invites everyone to reach out to their state representatives and senators to encourage the VA to be more proactive addressing the needs of veterans, as the Food and Drug Administration plays a critical role in helping veterans gain access to medical cannabis.
“Unless the Food and Drug Administration authorizes medical cannabis, then VA doctors are not going to be allowed to prescribe it. Doctors understandably don’t want to lose their licenses,” he explained. Adams reinforced that this needs to be a grassroots effort with local community organizing and outreach to legislators to start to move the needle on behalf of veterans.
In order to fulfill this mission and our commitment to support the veteran community effectively, we must be connected to the issues that veterans are facing right now. It is time to get the trauma and pain veterans experience out of the shadows so we can start talking about real solutions that start to break destructive cycles and better support our nation’s heroes.
I encourage you to look into these issues more, and if you feel as passionately as we do, contact your U.S. senators here, find your state representative(s) here and find your Massachusetts legislators here to let your voice be heard.
