North Brookfield Savings Bank and ICBA:
Safeguard Finances to Prepare for Natural Disasters
N. Brookfield, MA (Sept. 6, 2022)—Weather and health-related natural disasters can leave property in tatters and wreak financial havoc on families and communities. In recognition of National Preparedness Month, North Brookfield Savings Bank and the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) are advocating simple measures to prepare for the worst and reduce the financial impact of disasters on you and your family.
“While we can’t control mother nature, we can help our customers minimize their financial devastation by putting a plan in place before disaster strikes,” said Marco Bernasconi, Jr., CEO/President at North Brookfield Savings Bank. “As your faithful partner and ally, trust in NBSB to help you plan for the unexpected so you can focus on the recovery and rebuild process quickly and efficiently.”
North Brookfield Savings Bank and ICBA offer the following tips to help customers make a plan and regain their financial wherewithal following a natural disaster.
-
Establish an emergency savings account for use in a crisis and keep a small amount of cash on hand in case you’re unable to access funds electronically and need to purchase necessary supplies, fuel or food.
-
Prepare backup communications plans if both cellular and landline services falter.
-
Store digital and paper copies of financial documents, including investment records, property deeds, insurance policies, tax information, wills, trusts and financial and medical powers of attorney.
-
Make copies of personal documents— Driver’s licenses, Passports, Social Security cards, Birth certificates, adoptions, marriage and divorce papers, property deeds and titles.
-
Print contact information for trustees, guardians, and executors and store them away for safe keeping.
-
Create an inventory of personal and household valuables and use photo or video documentation to help assess their value and determine replacement costs.
-
Contact your insurance agent or visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) website, to determine if you need a flood insurance policy. For more helpful financial preparedness tips, download the Emergency Financial First Aid Kit to get started planning today.
“Community bankers stand shoulder to shoulder with customers in good and challenging times,” said ICBA President and CEO Rebeca Romero Rainey. “Count on their financial expertise to help you evaluate your financial preparedness before these unexpected, stressful events occur, to help protect you and your loved ones and reestablish your financial footing.”

Cady Brook Cannabis Donates $2,500 to Second Chance Animal Services
Southbridge, MA (September 13, 2022) – Cady Brook Cannabis presented Second Chance Animal Services CEO & Founder Sheryl Blancato with a check for $2,500 at last weekend’s End of Summer Bash. The donation is just one of the ways Cady Brook Cannabis has found to support the work that Second Chance does helping pets in the community. The daylong event featured live spray paint art, a free hot dog truck and pop-up shops in addition to a mobile adoption event where attendees could meet and adopt shelter pets. This was their second mobile adoption event and earlier this year, they held a supply drive to collect much-needed items for the animal welfare nonprofit.
Blancato said she is grateful for the support at a very critical time. “The economy is bringing more and more pet owners to our doors. Cady Brook Cannabis’s generosity is helping to keep pets out of shelters and in their homes with the people they love. The Southbridge community has been so welcoming, supporting our work.”
Daniel Flynn, one of the owners of Cady Brook Cannabis, said, “as an avid dog lover I couldn’t think of a better organization to work with than Second Chance Animal Services. I grew up with dogs my whole life, and now have made sure my children get that same experience. We currently have 3 dogs, and we prefer to rescue them. With Second Chance also having a location in Southbridge, it was a perfect opportunity to get involved in our town and support something that means a lot to myself, and our wonderful staff.”

Sturbridge to Celebrate National Public Lands Day: Riverlands Trails Open House
|
|
Sturbridge: The National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF), in collaboration with federal, state, community and nonprofit partners, will present the 29th annual National Public Lands Day celebration—the largest single-day volunteer event for America’s public lands. The theme for this year’s NPLD celebration is “Giving Back Together,” in honor of the role America’s public lands play in bringing people together for recreation, socialization, and stewardship will be celebrated in Sturbridge with a “Trails Open House” celebrating the completion of the Riverlands Parking lot & trails, two sections of the regional Grand Trunk Trail totaling just over a mile, and the opening of the Long Pond Open Space parcel and trail.
All events will be held at the Riverlands parking lot, 52 Stallion Hill Rd from 10 am to 12 Noon.
A formal ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 10 am, followed by several bike rides and walks including at 10:20 am guided, a 2-mile flow trail bike ride, 10:30 am a 2-mile trail run, and also a guided 1 mile trail walk and at 10:45 a guided 1.5 mile family bike ride. A staffed bike maintenance station courtesy of Putnam Cyclery will be available along with bike safety information. The trail committee will be staffing a table of local trail information and our trail guides. This open house event is hosted by The Friends of Sturbridge Trails (FrOST)
This Riverlands parking lot and trail work was several years in completion, using $94,000 in Mass Trails Grants, $65,000 in Community Preservation funds, and supported by the Sturbridge DPW, Northern Tree Service, Morse Engineering & Construction, Green Hill Engineering, and countless volunteer hours by the Trail Committee and our “3rd Saturday” volunteer trail day volunteers.
NEEF's National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the nation's largest single-day volunteer event for public lands. Established in 1994 and held annually on the fourth Saturday in September, this celebration brings out thousands of volunteers to help restore and improve public lands around the country. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, America's public lands acted as a safe haven for recreation, conversation, and the simple enjoyment of being outside the confines of our homes. In a time of disconnectedness and uncertainty, the outdoors brought people together and deepened our appreciation for the important role these spaces play in our lives.
Join us on Saturday, September 24, 2022, as we celebrate the 29th annual National Public Lands Day and renew our commitment to securing a safer and healthier world for ourselves, our children, and generations to come. On this page, www.neefusa.org/npld find a map for locating the Sturbridge or other NPLD events near you, and so much more.

The Federated Church of Sturbridge & Fiskdale
Pumpkin Patch Returns
STURBRIDGE, MA – The Federated Church of Sturbridge & Fiskdale’s popular Pumpkin Patch returns on Saturday, September 24, 2022 filling the entire front lawn of the church at 8 Maple Street, Sturbridge with a wide array of pumpkins and gourds for sale, along with mums, hay bales, and corn stalks for your holiday decorating.
The Pumpkin Patch will be open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting. As a special nod to the Federated Church’s 100th anniversary that is celebrated throughout the year, any customer whose order totals $100 or more will be able to choose one additional pumpkin for free.
The patch continues through October 30, with a variety of special events and activities scheduled, including a pumpkin carving demonstration by Roger Williams Park Jack-o-Lantern Spectacular carver Heidi Curboy on October 9 and a performance by Auburn a capella chorus, Rock Voices on October 16, followed by piano selections from Federated Church music director Andrew Kosiba.
According to committee chair Tom Mapplebeck, “The annual Federated Church of Sturbridge & Fiskdale Pumpkin Patch made its first appearance in 2018 as a fundraiser that benefits church operations and numerous regional ministries. A significant benefit goes to the Navajo Nation in Farmington, New Mexico where Pumpkins USA employs more than 700 Native Americans during the harvest months of September and October, and a full-time off-season staff that is comprised of entirely Native Americans. This has a lasting impact on a region with 42% unemployment.”
The Federated Church of Sturbridge and Fiskdale is celebrating its 100th anniversary throughout 2022. The Church was formed in 1922 when three Sturbridge congregations – the Congregational Church (1736), the Baptist Church (1747), and the Unitarian Society (1864) -- joined together to become one entity. Later, a fourth, non-denominational society, known as the Federated Society, was formed. Two thousand twenty-two marks the 100th anniversary of that union.
For additional information about the Pumpkin Patch or other upcoming events, please visit the Church website at sturfed.org or contact the Church office at (774) 304-1021 or churchoffice@sturfed.org. Regular updates will also be available on the Church’s Facebook page @FederatedChurchSturbridgeFiskdale.
The Federated Church of Sturbridge & Fiskdale joyfully celebrates Christ’s presence and God’s grace in our lives. Members of the community are welcome and invited to join in worship on Sunday mornings at 9:30 am.

About the book: It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend.
One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how. They're going to need to ask it a lot.

Tenth Annual Cruise for Critters Car Show Has Something for Everyone
Car show to benefit animals in need hosted by Al Widlan’s Service Connection
EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (September 13, 2022) – Second Chance Animal Services is gearing up for the tenth annual Cruise for Critters Car Show to be held at Westview Farms Creamery in Monson, Massachusetts. The event, which takes place on Saturday, September 24 from 10 am – 3 pm, will feature our Halloween Barktacular kids’ games and a vendor fair.
Second Chance CEO and founder Sheryl Blancato says everyone at the organization is looking forward to returning to Westview Farms Creamery for the important fall fundraising event. “It’s such a fun event with something for everyone. There’s always a great turnout of cars for this end-of-season show. We have a great selection of vendors joining us this year and many amazing raffle items donated by our supporters.”
“Plus we’ll have lots of fun for the kids too, including our Halloween Barktacular games like fishing for eyeballs and a giant slingshot. The farm has some adorable goats who always put on a good show and live music will be provided by Spare Parts.”
The corn maze and pumpkin picking are set to open on the day of the event. Westview Farm also has a restaurant with a selection of burgers and wraps, and over 30 flavors of handmade ice cream. Visitors can feel free to bring their dogs if they are leashed.
Blancato hopes car enthusiasts, animal lovers and families looking for fun fall activities will all come out to take in the fun event. “This fundraiser has never been more important than now. So many pets are counting on us, and we can’t let them down.” Blancato is grateful to all the sponsors who are making the event possible, including Joe Campisi, a longtime supporter of Second Chance.
The Cruise for Critters Car Show is organized by Al Widlan, owner of Service Connection which specializes in custom dual exhaust installation. Widlan’s Service Connection also offers repairs and services for classic and modern vehicles, plus flatbed towing.
The car show entry fee is $20, and admission is free for spectators. Westview Farms Creamery is located at 109 East Hill Road in Monson. The event will take place on Saturday, September 24 from 10 am – 3 pm (with a rain date of Saturday, October 1.)

Golfers Wanted to Play “Fore” the Cause
of a Local Community Center
BRIMFIELD – Brimfield’s beloved community center Hitchcock Academy hits the green this September, inviting golfers to play for the love of the game - and the cause of lifelong learning - at the organization’s second annual golf tournament.
Hitchcock’s 2nd FORE a Great Cause Golf Tournament will take place on Sunday, September 25th at 1pm at the Heritage Country Club in Charlton, MA. Price is $120/player with the option to sign up as a foursome or individual. Registration fee includes entry to the golf tournament, cart, steak dinner, contests, prizes, and snacks. The tournament will be scramble format. Contests include a hole-in-one contest for a cash prize, a putting contest, and other games.
Charlton’s Heritage Country Club is an 18 hole championship golf course located in the rolling hills of Central Massachusetts. It has long been considered one of the finest public golf courses in the Central Mass area. A par 71, measuring 6,710 yards, it offers players of all abilities a spectacular golf experience. The tournament is also open to all levels.
Last year’s inaugural tournament exceeded the organization’s expectations and they look forward to growing it each year.
“Many players had a connection with Hitchcock. For some, it was a second or even third generation connection, like those who played in honor of their parents who had graduated from Hitchcock when it was still a high school,” said trustee Mark Carron, who played as part of a foursome. “I personally have such fond memories of participating in recreational activities as a kid at Hitchcock, and that is something I hope to see rejuvenated in the future.”
Sponsorship opportunities remain starting at $100. Businesses interested in supporting the fundraiser can reach out to Executive Director Cindy Skowrya.
“We have a fabulous day planned. It’s a beautiful course, and we have a delicious steak dinner included, plus lots of extras to make it a really fun day,” says Hitchcock’s Executive Director Cindy Skowrya. “We hope to get as many players as possible to enjoy a day of golf and camaraderie, and the long-term forecast looks great.”
Hitchcock Academy is a community center located at 2 Brookfield Road in Brimfield serving the community with educational, recreational, and cultural programming. More information can be found at www.hitchcockacademy.org.

Sturbridge Herbfest
Saturday, October 1, 2022, 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM
The Third Annual Sturbridge Herbfest Saturday, October 1, 2022 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Sturbridge Common, Route 131, Sturbridge, MA.
This Herbfest is a brainchild of three local herbalists: Salli Greene, Jo Anne Grubert, and Chris Haller. There are very few herbal conferences nationally and none in this area. This can make it difficult for herbalists, young and old, male and female, to gain more education in a conference setting. Sturbridge, because it is centrally located, is an ideal location and is expected that the Herbfest will be an annual event.
There will also be local products, handmade items, crafts and more set up on the lawn of the Sturbridge Common.
