No Birthday Left Behind,
Center of Hope Joins Forces to Aid Homeless Children
|
|
Southbridge, Massachusetts, Aug. 17, 2023 – No Birthday Left Behind has partnered with the Center of Hope Foundation, Inc., to help children living in homeless shelters celebrate memorable birthdays.
Members of the Center of Hope’s employment program are preparing boxes containing everything needed for children’s birthday parties, which are sponsored by the Central Massachusetts Chapter of No Birthday Left Behind.
“Helping fill the No Birthday Left Behind bags and boxes has been amazing. Our program participants are excited to help this program grow and they know that this program helps put smiles on so many faces,” said Dianna Rebello, Director of Employment Services at the Center of Hope Foundation.
“We’re grateful for the help the Center of Hope Foundation is providing NBLB in its effort to serve children in homeless shelters. The party boxes prepared by the Center of Hope will provide every child with a special, memorable birthday,” said Melody Beach, who directs the Massachusetts Chapter of NBLB and is the founder of the human resources consultancy Melody Beach Consulting Group.
The Central Massachusetts Chapter of NBLB sponsored nine birthday children in August. One box for each child is sent to the child’s location. The box includes: streamers; balloons; a tablecloth; plates, napkins, cups and utensils; hats; noisemakers; banner; candle; card; a wrapped gift for the birthday child; and a goody bag for each child who attends the party. Eighty goody bags were produced for the August birthdays.
The birthday child or children for that month are nominated by the homeless shelter staff, and the party boxes are prepared with goods, services or gift cards donated to the nonprofit by vendors.
Founded by a high school student in California, No Birthday Left Behind has a mission to provide every homeless shelter child aged 1 through 14 with the opportunity to celebrate their birthday in a special way. NBLB is supporting 23 shelters across the U.S., including Children’s Services of Roxbury locations in both Worcester and Roxbury, Massachusetts.
The Center of Hope Foundation is a nonprofit agency that serves over 500 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities from more than 64 towns in South Central Massachusetts and Northeastern Connecticut.
The Center of Hope Foundation’s Vocational Employment Services offers over 180 individuals with disabilities and/or disabling circumstances opportunities for productive work and volunteer opportunities. Employment supports also are in place to offer gainfully employed individuals the opportunity to socialize, brainstorm, provide mutual support, and discuss the benefits and concerns regarding employment. They are constantly looking for new opportunities so their program participants can explore their talents and learn new skills while helping others within the community.

Second Annual Cocktails for Tails to Help Springfield Area Pets
Event to Raise Funds for Springfield Second Chance Vet Hospital
LONGMEADOW, MA (September 8, 2023) — Tickets are on sale for Second Chance Animal Services’ Second Annual Cocktails for Tails, a very special fundraiser to help pets in the Springfield area to live better lives. The event will take place on Thursday, October 5th from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at the Twin Hills Country Club in Longmeadow. The intimate gathering of animal lovers will include live music, a silent auction and raffle and there will be hors d’oeuvres and a variety of food stations for all to enjoy. Funds raised will directly benefit programs that provide access to care at the nonprofit’s Mulberry Street Community Veterinary Hospital.
Lindsay Doray, Second Chance’s Chief Development Officer, is extending an invitation to area animal lovers to come celebrate Second Chance’s commitment to Springfield area pets and their families. “Since 2015, Springfield area pet owners have turned to Second Chance for help caring for their pets,” said Doray. “This is a critical time for pets in the Springfield community. Our services are in great demand as inflation and rising interest rates increase the pressure on the budgets of those on a fixed income. Our Community Veterinary Hospital on Mulberry Street is helping to keep pets with the people they love.”
The Mulberry Street location provides access to full-service veterinary care through reduced rates for those that qualify, helping to keep area pets and their families together. Second Chance has three other hospitals in North Brookfield, Southbridge, and Worcester.
Doray encourages area businesses to join in the evening’s festivities. “Consider donating an item, becoming a sponsor, or purchasing a block of tickets - perfect for thanking your team or enjoying a company night out while supporting a local charity. Your support will directly improve the lives of pets in our community.”
Live music for the event will be performed by John and Christina Cantalini and attendees will be taking home a swag bag sponsored in part by Tito’s Handmade Vodka. Tickets are $65 per person and include passed hors d’oeuvres, a cheeseboard, and food stations. To purchase tickets or for more information on sponsorship opportunities, vis it www.secondchanceanimals.org/cocktails.

2nd Annual Police vs. Fire Baseball Classic, Presented by Country Bank at Polar Park,
Raises $15,750 for Why Me & Sherry's House
Worcester Police bests Worcester Fire 14–3 in August 27 contest
|
|
WORCESTER, MA — To launch Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September, the 2nd annual Police vs. Fire Baseball Classic, presented by Country Bank at Polar Park on Sunday, August 27, raised $15,750 for Why Me & Sherry’s House, a Worcester nonprofit that provides resources and support to children battling cancer and their families.
The Worcester Police Officers defeated the Worcester Firefighters 14–3 in nine innings.
As the home team, the Worcester Fire Department selected Why Me & Sherry’s House to benefit from this year’s event in honor of retired Fire Captain Mark Wyco, who lost his daughter Bridget to childhood cancer in 1996.
After the game, the Worcester Red Sox and Country Bank presented the check for $15,750 to Rebecca Kuczarski, the Executive Director of Why Me & Sherry’s House.
They also presented the 2023 Paul Scully Most Valuable Player Award to Officer Ty Sterner, a southpaw who allowed just two hits and one run in six innings pitched. The Worcester native, who has served in the Worcester Police Department for two years, was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 23rd round of the 2014 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft from the University of Rhode Island. However, a pair of Tommy John surgeries cut his professional baseball career short.
As the M.V.P., Officer Sterner won a Country Bank jersey, four V.I.P. tickets to a future WooSox game—at which he will be honored with the opportunity to throw a Ceremonial First Pitch—and a gift card to The Mercantile Restaurant.
“There was an extraordinary feeling at this year’s event,” said Dr. Charles A. Steinberg, President of the Worcester Red Sox and the WooSox Foundation. “Our first responders are the heart and soul of Worcester, and we believe this friendly but competitive game will continue to grow into a civic treasure. We thank our friends and founding partners at Country Bank for collaborating with us yet again on what has become one of the most fun—and impactful—events of the year.”
“Country Bank is honored to partner with the Worcester Red Sox Foundation in presenting the Police vs. Fire game,” said Paul Scully, President and CEO of Country Bank. “We have been a longtime supporter of the Police and Fire Departments across the many markets we serve. The critical work these departments do each and every day truly makes a difference for our communities. It is also our privilege to support Why Me Sherry’s House with this year’s donation to assist them in the great work they do for Childhood Cancer.”
At the inaugural game September 26, 2022, $15,680 was raised for the Manny 267 Foundation, which honors and celebrates the life of the late Worcester Police Officer Enmanuel “Manny” Familia, who made the ultimate sacrifice June 4, 2021, when he heroically dove into Green Hill Pond to attempt to save a drowning teenage boy.
In its first two years, the event raised $31,430 for local causes that hit home for Worcester’s first responders.
Country Bank is one of the WooSox’ 21 founding partners. The WooSox Foundation and Country Bank also collaborate on the “Most Valuable Teachers” (MVTs) program, which recognizes extraordinary teachers in the region, as well as the “WooStars” program, which rewards nonprofits driving social change across Central Massachusetts.
So far in 2023, the WooSox Foundation has donated $88,760 toward the effort to conquer cancer.

September 14, 2023 – Country Bank, a full-service financial institution serving Central and Western Massachusetts, proudly supports the MA Farm Resiliency Fund. The Governor and Lt. Governor, in partnership with the community and the United Way of Central Massachusetts (UWCM), has established the MA Farm Resiliency Fund, to respond to the recent storm impact in Western and Central Massachusetts. This initiative aims to provide assistance to farms affected by the recent flooding and heavy rains that impacted an estimated 2,700 acres, across 100 farms, resulting in $15M in losses.
"The relief provided by the Farm Fund is going to be life-changing for so many Massachusetts farmers," said Governor Healey. "The Lieutenant Governor and I spent time over the last several weeks traveling around the state to visit with farmers that have been affected so severely by these rains. We saw the damage, and we know how much of their livelihoods are at stake. That's why I'm thankful to all of the organizations and foundations who have donated to the fund. It's because of their support that Massachusetts farmers will be able to start fresh for the new season,” stated Gov. Maura Healey.
“Our goal with the Fund is to support farmers and communities by raising and distributing funds with urgency, as they are facing challenges right now. We are so grateful to Country Bank for immediately stepping up and joining us to address the losses for farms, food pantries and the rural communities who rely on a vibrant agricultural economy,” stated Tim Garvin, President & CEO, United Way of Central MA.

Turin, Italy’s Least Discovered Food City
Turin is Italy’s fourth largest city, though it is still largely under-visited compared to other Italian cities. This leaves room for the discovery of some unexpected culinary treasures.
Turin is surrounded by the Alps and tucked away in the country’s northwest corner. The foods grown and crafted there are still grounded in what’s fresh and seasonal. Foods unique to the region like rice, alpine cheeses, hazelnuts, and truffles, both black and white feature prominently on local menus.
Chef Rico is excited to dive into this lesser-known culinary corner of Italy and share his own take on this unique city in the Piedmont region. This event is $59 per person with wine pairings, or $49 without. Tax and gratuity are not included.
Make your reservations now by calling Avellino at 508-347-2321.
