Speaker Bio: Congressman Jim McGovern was born in Worcester on November 20, 1959 and grew up around the corner from his current home on Burncoat Street. Growing up in Worcester taught Jim a lot about the value of hard work and giving back to his community. He attended Burncoat Elementary School and then Worcester Academy. By seventh grade, Jim knew he wanted to make a difference. He volunteered on the 1972 presidential campaign of Senator George McGovern-no relation-and held signs and knocked doors for the Senator's anti-war campaign. Jim attended The American University in Washington, D.C. where he earned both his bachelor's degree in History ('81) and his Master's Degree in Public Administration ('84). Jim was elected to the House of Representatives in 1996, and through his work in Washington and at home in Massachusetts, he has been a voice for the most vulnerable and a strong advocate for working families. One of Jim's greatest passions is ending hunger at home and abroad. He is the founder and co-chair of the House Hunger Caucus and Ranking Member on the House Subcommittee on Nutrition, where he advocates tirelessly for funding programs that help working families, children, and the elderly put food on the table when times are tough. He also authored the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program to provide school-based meals for millions of children in some of the world's poorest countries.  In 2001, Jim was appointed to a seat on the powerful House Rules Committee, "the traffic cop of Congress" which sets the terms for debate on most legislation and he became Chair of this committee in January. Jim's work on behalf of Massachusetts and the nation has a proven record of success and he is proud to represent Massachusetts' Second Congressional District in Washington, D.C. Synopsis:
Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years of child raising in the suburbs. Greg's career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate's career, as a public-school English teacher, is beginning to offer her more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park-or that has found him-bearing only the name "Sylvia" on her nametag. A street-smart mixture of Lab and Poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. And Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn't understand the relationship between man and dog. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise, and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives.

Fireplace Feasts
Upcoming Dates: April 7, 13, 14, 19 & 20

Join us for a special dining event as the Innkeepers at the Salem Cross Inn announce their series of 1700's style feasts, prepared on the open hearth of a great fieldstone fireplace. Relax by the fire or lend a hand as dinner is prepared for you in colonial style. Stir the chowder as it bubbles in our cast iron cauldron. See your prime rib, roasted 'to a turn,' as the only known authentic Roasting Jack still operating in America rotates slowly over a crackling fire of wild cherry logs. Beware the brimming bowl of freshly whipped cream - the perfect complement to New England's best apple pie.

While your dinner is cooking to perfection, enjoy a horse drawn wagon or sleigh ride through the valley on the Inn's pristine 600 acres. Shake off the chill with warm mulled wine or cider upon your return. Browse our extensive collection of colonial and federal period American antiques. The Fireplace Feast makes a thoughtful and unique gift for special friends or deserving associates.

The Fireplace Feast is just one of our many dining events that provides an authentic colonial experience. At Salem Cross Inn, we capture the history and culture of 1700's America. Salem Cross Inn's dining events, excellent cuisine, and atmosphere have been featured on Food Network's "The Best Of," WCVB TV5 Boston's "Chronicle" and chosen as the "Hidden Jewel" by Boston's Phantom Gourmet and WGBY.

Patriots' Day
Monday, April 15, 2019
Old Sturbridge Village

OSV patriots Patriots' Day observances at Old Sturbridge will resound with the peal of bells, the stirring beat of drums and the thrilling call of the fife, as the Sturbridge Militia musters in the countryside on Monday, April 15. Special programs and activities throughout the day will invite visitors to experience the sights and sounds of our colonial ancestors as the Revolutionary War began.

Through military drills and maneuvers, musket demonstrations, and more, the members for the Sturbridge Militia will bring to life the stories of the men who hastened from their farms, homes, and families to march to the aid of those already engaged in the initial battle of the American Revolution against King George's tyranny. Young visitors are invited to take part, wielding muskets and swords, learning to drill and march in the manner of the boys of '76. "Muskets" are provided for this ever-popular exercise in leadership, bravery, and derring-do for small patriots. Witness the making of real musket balls in the Blacksmith Shop. Also joining us for the day will be the martial band and the visiting surgeon from the USS Constitution. Cannon demonstrations will be held in the morning and afternoon.

Not all Americans fought against the British crown; many sided with and pledged their allegiance to the king. They called themselves loyalists; to them, our patriots were rebels. On Monday meet one of those loyalists; he will tell you of his side of the conflict, ofttimes at the cost of hardship and heartache to him and his family.

How did the news of Lexington and Concord affect a small New England community? For a day of history, entertainment and discovery, visit Old Sturbridge Village on April 15 as we celebrate our nation's beginning and continuing perseverance, in war and in peace.

Please note that certain activities, like cannon demonstrations, are weather dependent.
The Village is open 9:30 am - 4:00 pm on this day.

New member Baskets

The Chamber has teamed up with the Center of Hope to create gift baskets to welcome new members to the Chamber of Central Mass South. The Chamber presents our new members with gift baskets that will not only have a monetary value but also to give the recipient an opportunity to learn more about other Chamber members and their services. These baskets make a terrific first impression and are a great way to introduce your business to new prospects. Can you help us fill these baskets with interesting goodies?

We are always seeking interesting, practical items to include in our welcome baskets. We welcome your contributions of items like modest gift certificates, discount coupons, items with your company's logo like piggy banks, thumb drives and coffee mugs, free trial items, small items your company manufactures or whatever else might promote your company and be a value to our new members.

We are looking to assemble about a dozen baskets at a time so that time sensitive material will not be out of date when received. If you would like to donate items for this program, please drop them off at the Chamber office or give us a call to arrange pick up your donated items.
