On Gratitude: A Message from Rita

Rita Schiano recently completed her term on the Chamber's Board of Directors, on which she has served since 2014. We are extremely grateful for her service, and for her positivity and inspiration! Visit RitaSchiano.com to contact Rita for strategic life coaching, mentoring, workshops, books and motivational speaking.

Psychological research finds that people's happiness levels are remarkably stable over the long-term. A possible explanation comes from studies in the psychology of gratitude. Yes, you read that correctly -- being thankful just may be the secret to happiness.

The study* cited that people who were in the gratitude condition felt fully 25% happier -- they were more optimistic about the future, they felt better about their lives.

The words "gratitude" and "grace" share a common Latin origin, gratus, meaning "pleasing" or "thankful." When you are in a deep state of gratitude, you may feel the presence of grace. Reflect on this. As we become more mindful of the present moment, we begin to recognize the things around us that we may have taken for granted.

Learning to practice gratitude is one of life's most valuable lessons. As Aristotle taught us, all virtues have value and the virtue of gratitude helps to increase feelings of satisfaction with our lives and keeps us from falling into the excess of a greedy or entitled frame of mind.

There are many simple, yet powerful ways to practice gratitude on a daily basis.
  • Thank, separately, both the cashier and the bagger at the grocery store.
  • Send a hand-written thank you note when you receive a gift, however small.
  • Make "thank you" a common phrase in your vocabulary.
  • Keep a gratitude journal. Each night write 1-3 things for which you were grateful during the day.
Have a joyful Thanksgiving everyone. And remember to live a gracious and flourishing life.
Rita

New Year's Eve Fireplace Feast

Start with some hors d'oeuvres by the fireplace as you watch your prime rib roasting to perfection on a device dating back to 1700. Take a horse drawn sleigh/wagon ride through the back fields then chase the chill away with some nice, hot, mulled cider or wine. Relax, help make apple pie using an antique apple peeler and corer, or make seafood chowder in an antique iron cauldron right in the fieldstone fireplace.

Next, get ready for the main feast! Start off with a champagne toast to the New Year, then sit back for dinner. You'll be served your fireplace seafood chowder and prime rib* (and later you'll be offered seconds!). In addition, there will be bowls of fresh butternut squash, spinach pie and oven roasted potatoes. Don't fill up on the homemade rolls, even though they are quite delicious, because you'll want to save some room for the scrumptious deep dish apple pie with fresh whipped cream.

Later, it's time to go downstairs to the Chestnut Room where a DJ will be playing and you can dance right through the midnight hour! Wear a party hat and use those noisemakers! It's a great way to ring in the New Year!

* If prime rib doesn't tickle your fancy, salmon will be offered as well. Just order it when you purchase your tickets.
Visit the website for additional information.

Arrive at 6:30pm - Feast begins at 8:00pm
Adults (13 yrs and over) $85 | Kids (12 yrs and under) $60 | includes all taxes and gratuities.
ALL TICKETS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE AND NON-TRANSFERABLE.

Festival of {Giving} Trees - 2019
La Salle Reception Center, Southbridge

It's here!! The 2019 Festival of {Giving} Trees is taking place December 5th thru December 8th. Celebrating our 22nd year, this four-day family event is designed to be a holiday activity. The mission of the Festival is to raise money to help the Silent Spring Institute, the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition and The Cancer Center at Harrington Hospital fight the battle against breast cancer and to help fund cancer research. Over the past twenty years, the Festival of {Giving} Trees has raised and donated over $650,000 to these beneficiaries.

The Festival of {Giving} Trees features more than 100 uniquely decorated trees on display under one roof.

Some are elegant, nostalgic and breathtaking. Some are humorous, some are traditional and some are really hip. The only thing they have in common is that they are all different and they are all sparkling!

And each and every one of them will be taken home by lucky raffle winners.
Come join us! It is a community-wide event, so bring your family, friends and neighbors.

We Welcome Interesting Goodies for our Welcome Baskets!

New member Baskets

The Chamber has teamed up with the Center of Hope to create gift baskets to welcome new members to the Chamber of Central Mass South. The Chamber presents our new members with gift baskets that will not only have a monetary value but also to give the recipient an opportunity to learn more about other Chamber members and their services. These baskets make a terrific first impression and are a great way to introduce your business to new prospects. Can you help us fill these baskets with interesting goodies?

We are always seeking interesting, practical items to include in our welcome baskets. We welcome your contributions of items like modest gift certificates, discount coupons, items with your company's logo like piggy banks, thumb drives and coffee mugs, free trial items, small items your company manufactures or whatever else might promote your company and be a value to our new members.

We are looking to assemble about a dozen baskets at a time so that time sensitive material will not be out of date when received. If you would like to donate items for this program, please drop them off at the Chamber office or give us a call to arrange pick up your donated items. Contact Alix at 508-347-2761 or e-mail [email protected] if you have any questions or to arrange a pickup. Thank you for your contributions!
