23 Rescued Dogs Find Forever Homes, Work Continues for Second Chance

with More Dogs from Same Rescue Mission

EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (October 23, 2024) – Second Chance Animal Services is pleased to announce that 23 small dogs rescued earlier this month from an overwhelmed owner have all found their forever homes. Seven of these dogs are in foster-to-adopt arrangements as they complete ongoing veterinary care. However, the work is far from over, as the nonprofit has just taken in four additional dogs from the same case that were initially thought to have placements, including one with significant medical needs.

Among the new arrivals is 8-year-old Esmeralda, a timid dachshund mix. She came to Second Chance under-socialized and fearful, but her gentle nature is starting to emerge. Esmeralda required surgery to repair a large hernia during her spay, and pre-surgical bloodwork revealed she is heartworm positive. Her treatment for heartworm, which can take 9–12 months, will be followed by a dental procedure. Her care alone is expected to total nearly $2,500.

The rescued dogs, a mix of Maltese, Poodle, Yorkie, and Shih Tzu breeds, were brought in under urgent circumstances. Thanks to the generous support of the community, they quickly received the medical attention they needed. All but one dog have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and treated for other medical issues. These once-neglected dogs are now on the path to healthier, brighter futures.

“We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from our community,” said Lindsay Doray, Chief Development Officer of Second Chance. “Because of your generosity, the original group of dogs are settling into new homes. Your donations made this possible, and we truly can’t thank you enough.”

While celebrating the progress made, Doray emphasized that the need for help continues. “The total cost to care for these dogs exceeded $15,000. This case reminds us just how critical ongoing support is to our mission. Donations ensure we can continue providing life-saving medical care, shelter, and hope for pets in crisis, like Esmeralda and like Moana, who is awaiting specialized surgery for cherry eye.”

Doray urged the community to continue supporting their work. “Your donation today will help us be ready for the next emergency, ensuring every pet in crisis gets the second chance they deserve.”

Experience the Magic of the Holidays:

Christmas by Candlelight Returns to Old Sturbridge Village

Tickets Now on Sale

Sturbridge, M.A. – Old Sturbridge Village is pleased to announce the return of Christmas by Candlelight, a cherished holiday celebration of New England’s festive traditions. Tickets are now on sale to the public for select dates in November and December.

The Village will transform into a stunning winter wonderland beginning November 29, featuring over 85 beautifully decorated trees on the Christmas Tree Trail, over 80 wreaths, hundreds of candles illuminating the pathways, and 5,625 feet of garland adorning historic buildings. Each evening of the program will kick off at 4:30 p.m. with a magical lighting ceremony.

Visitors can experience a variety of activities, including knitting Christmas stockings and baking traditional holiday treats. Guests can stroll through the picturesque village and cross the enchanting Christmas Wish Bridge, a scenic path lined with trees along the Quinebaug River. Children will have the chance to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus in their new cabin, where they can share their holiday wishes. Visitors are also encouraged to participate in the annual Gingerbread House contest, where creative entries will be displayed for public voting.

Christmas by Candlelight is a celebration of the cherished traditions that make the season truly special,” said Rhys Simmons, Director of Interpretation at Old Sturbridge Village. “Our goal is to transport you back in time with an experience that delights all the senses. Picture twinkling lights adorning the trees, the enticing aromas and flavors of mulled cider and freshly baked gingerbread, and the familiar sounds of holiday carols echoing all around.”

This year’s Christmas by Candlelight will feature an array of live entertainment, including historical performances and readings of Christmas tales for children. New this year is “Upon a Midnight Clear – An Acoustic New England Christmas,” a musical journey showcasing local artists reinterpreting classic carols.

In addition to the festivities, guests can explore the origins of classic traditions such as nutcrackers and gingerbread, along with a remarkable miniature nativity scene featuring over 600 pieces. The Richardson House will showcase Italian Christmas customs. There will also be plenty of opportunities for holiday shopping at the Miner Grant Store and the Ox & Yoke Mercantile.

“This event has become a tradition for so many guests year after year, and many families look forward to it as the highlight of their holiday season,” continued Simmons. “We invite everyone to experience the joy of the season, relish in classic traditions, and create new memories with loved ones this winter at Christmas by Candlelight.”

Christmas by Candlelight is made possible by our generous sponsors: Cornerstone Bank, Country Bank, G&F Precision Molding, and Southbridge Credit Union. For more information on tickets and full event details, visit the Old Sturbridge Village website.

Second Chance Animal Services Supports ASPCA in Hurricane Relief Efforts

EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (October 25, 2024)  Second Chance Animal Services is stepping up to support the ASPCA in the ongoing relief efforts following the devastation of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina. The nonprofit organization is providing some critical supplies, including crates and other essential items, to assist pets affected by the disaster.

As the ASPCA focuses on rescuing and caring for animals displaced by the storm, Second Chance is committed to helping with some of the needed supplies. This collaboration aims to ensure pets have the care and resources they need during this critical time.

"We're honored to play a part in supporting pets affected by Hurricane Helene," said Second Chance CEO Sheryl Blancato. "While the ASPCA is working diligently to reunite pets with their families, we’re providing some of the supplies they need to care for these animals while that process happens."

The ASPCA is holding pets to allow time for families to locate and reunite with their missing pets. Once this reunification period passes, pets without homes will be placed in new, loving homes.

The supply exchange is scheduled to take place today, with additional assistance planned as recovery efforts continue. Second Chance is currently taking in pets from overwhelmed shelters in other parts of the country, using return transport vehicles to deliver essential supplies to hurricane-affected areas. After the 30-day reunification period, Second Chance expects to take in pets from hurricane-affected areas, ensuring that all reunifications are prioritized.

Sturbridge Businesses: Signage Grant Program Ending Soon

The Town of Sturbridge is offering a grant program to help small businesses improve or create new exterior signage. Qualified businesses will be eligible for a grant for up to $2,500.00 for sign creation or improvements to existing signage. The program will require a 50% match. Funding for this program will not be available after November 30 so expressions of interest and applications should be filed soon.

Businesses that are interested in applying can contact Terry Masterson, Economic Development/Tourism Coordinator with the Town at 508-347-2500 Ext. 1411. Accessing the grant program will require advance work with the Town on following the Town’s Signage Design regulations as well as approving the costs for sign creation or improvements.

The purpose of the program is to create a positive visual impact for businesses as they work to attract patronage. Enhanced aesthetics for businesses have been shown to increase property values, improve the marketability of retail space and attract consumers who may be local residents or visitors from afar.

Financing for this grant availability will be sourced through American Rescue Plan (ARPA) funds with a total allocation of $30,000. Robin Grimm, Sturbridge Town Administrator commented; “We are very excited to be offering this new resource that will help businesses improve their visibility and “curb appeal”. Sturbridge is a well trafficked location so attractive signage strengthens our small businesses and elevates the streetscape of our town.”
