Darren Drake is a division 1 official and certified mental performance coach from Raleigh, NC. Back in May, he wrote a wonderful article on the A-Z’s of mental performance. You can check it out on the Crown Refs Medium page. This is a must read.
“Training the mental skills in officiating are similar to training the physical skills meaning that they won’t happen overnight or by accident. It takes time to implement and see the change and improvement in your game. The trick is to start small and keep it simple. Pick 2 or 3 areas to intentionally focus on and have an accountability partner to help push one another and keep track of your progress. Many times you will start to see changes in your relationships and quality of life before you start seeing the changes in what you do, officiating!”

💯 When a coach goes into heavy whining and complaining mode it's only right that we communicate with them more like a 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 than we would an 𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁.
💯 They temporarily lose their ”adult status” with their actions and behavior and we have to combat that by inserting responses that will give the coach a better perspective and help them get back to acting more like a mature adult.

He is a certified Mental skills coach who recently started sharing his expertise and knowledge through his platform, WIN Mental Performance, which is a service that helps you achieve an elite mindset.

One attention grabbing piece that majority of officials don't utilize is the art of visualization.
In this episode, Darren takes us through what guided confidence training is. He walks us through a few examples of guided imagery that takes him through specific plays and different scenarios within a game.
"Training the mind to ensure your mind is ready so you don't have to take energy on the fundamentals," Darren states.
Whenever there is talks of anything mental, there are often stigmas around the industry. One common misconceptions about Mental Training is that "Something has to be wrong with you so you have to fix your mind."
However, it's just like physical strength training.
The best athletes are in the gym working on their physical strength, just like the best skilled mental athletes have to put in the work on their mind, as well.
When asked, if someone is looking to improve their mindset - Darren touches on some ideas how to audit yourself:
- What are your thoughts about?
- Are you thinking about things that are out of your control or things you can control?
- Do you have a plan?
- Are you setting goals? How are you setting goals?

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 in her previous 2 stops along the way proved to be the perfect platform to help catapult her career to new heights.
𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 about her relationship with basketball, from her playing days at Long Beach State, to ascend up the college ladder.
𝗖𝗿𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 some of her most valuable experience refereeing NBA players in LA’s famous Drew League and recalls a memorable story from Kobe Bryant’s time there.

𝗢𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 we discussed slowing down the tempo of our game which includes the amount of time we allow ourselves to process a play, whistle cadence, rotations, signals, communication etc.
𝗪𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗱 the right way to ask your partner for help, how to present your fouls with more pop and staying mechanically thorough. We also noted to avoid calling through the paint in the lead position when the ball is on the weak side.

It was designed specifically for 1 referee but we wanted to share it with you so it can also bring you value. Hopefully, you can add a few things to your game. 𝗜𝗻 𝗲𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝟭, we discuss how to respond when a coach questions your partner's call and what not to say to a coach. At the end of this 1-1 coaching session, we conduct a ”signals practice” to improve our sharpness when reporting at the table.

Nicole Robinson was always on the other side of the whistle.
The 25-year-old Greenburgh resident was a basketball standout at Ursuline and went on to play one season at Manhattanville College. Initially, refereeing was a side gig, a way to earn some extra pocket money.
“My dad turned me onto it when he told me I could do CYO games and make $50 a game,” Robinson said. “That sounded great.”
Not long after those preliminary runs two years ago, the bar was reset.
Robinson is currently on a new career path, working to become a full-time basketball official. She is determined to reach the highest level and call games in the NBA...

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 cannot deliver a message if the receiver of the message is offline....
So ensure that you have the full attention of the coach before you send your response or provide your explanation. When you help to get them back online it gives your words a higher chance of hitting and ultimately achieving a more positive exchange and outcome.

It’s amazing how confident and certain we can be about a call until someone questions or disagrees with us.
seconds ago we just felt great about the play but since we got a little push back and resistance we allowed doubt to creep in.
We cannot allow negative comments or opinions to creep into our psyche and influence our decision making.
This same concept applies to positive comments too by not allowing them to get to your head and gas you up.

𝗔𝘀𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗝𝗿, are brother and sister officials from Kansas City, Ks.
